Protecting Potoroos and their Native Neighbours

Education for best-practice cat management to decrease impacts on biodiversity

Thanks to a grant from the State Natural Resource Management, we are able to implement this project in the Two Peoples Bay / Manypeaks and Waychinicup area. This area is highly significant to local residents, tourists, the scientific community, and the Minang Traditional Owners. Several famous endemic and threatened fauna species live exclusively in the area, the Gilbert’s Potoroo and the Noisy Scrub-bird. The critically endangered Western Ground Parrot / Kyloring has been reintroduced to an area east of Albany. The area is also home to significant populations of Quokka, Western Ringtail Possum, Western Bristlebird, and Australasian Bittern. In addition, there are many other threatened fauna species with significant populations in this area.

Roaming cats pose a threat to these vulnerable species. We will work with residents of the area as well as neighbouring communities, Noongar groups, school children, and the general public to encourage sustainable social change. We will encourage responsible cat ownership and provide education to the community how to protect the immense biodiversity of this unique region.  We will keep the community updated about feral and invasive species events in this area and look into the barriers and opportunities for feral cat control.

We thank the Oyster Harbour Catchment Group for sponsoring us.
