In 2019, using the rather uninspiring name Albany and Surrounds Feral Cat Working Group, we brought together representatives from wildlife organisations, animal rescue groups, cat owners, veterinary clinic staff, volunteers from catchment groups as well as staff from local and state government agencies to tackle issues related to roaming cats.
Our aim is to raise awareness about the impact roaming cats have on our wildlife, to promote responsible cat ownership, to reduce the number of stray and feral cats in the community and to help protect the wildlife of our region.
Our region is home to many endangered species including the world's rarest marsupial, Gilbert's Potoroo and Western Australia's rarest bird, the Western Ground Parrot / Kyloring. We therefore encourage landholders to undertake best-practice feral cat control.
In 2024 we changed our name to C L A W S - Cat Laws And Wildlife Survival Working Group. We feel this new name better represents what we are trying to achieve.
We meet on a regular basis and would like to invite you to get in touch with us if you feel you can help make our region a safer place for both wildlife and cats. Please email us for more information. Convenor Jenni Loveland is happy to provide advice.
