Green sea turtle nesting at night in Ostional.
Located in Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, one of the most biologically diverse places in the world, I learned about sea turtles, mangroves, local culture, and explored an incredibly beautiful environment. This travel abroad experience was very exciting for me, as I got to participate in meaningful restoration work and learn in an environment that I had never been in before.
This field course consisted of hands-on in water sea turtle research, including identification, geolocation, population sampling, tagging, nest and egg evaluation, and safe net casting. When I wasn't in the water, I was restoring mangrove populations through species collection, plot planting, survival assessments, population data, and analyzing plot sections.
Not only did I develop my field skills throughout this opportunity, but I also improved my ecological knowledge, learned from local communities about conservation initiatives, and I was able to explore a part of the world I had never been to before.
