Turmeric Indicator Activity – Acids and Bases
As part of this subject enrichment activity, students used turmeric paper to identify whether common household substances are acids or bases. Turmeric acts as a natural indicator that remains yellow in acidic substances and turns red in basic substances. Lemon juice and vinegar showed no colour change, indicating that they are acids. Toothpaste and baking soda changed the turmeric paper from yellow to red, showing that they are bases. Through this hands-on experiment, students learned how indicators help us distinguish between acids and bases in an interesting and practical way.
