Crew Positions
At Cinema Workshop, we provide a number of opportunities for students to get involved in our productions. Here is a list of roles and expectations we encourage our members to take on when being a part of one of our productions. These roles are not limited to their descriptions and these are certainly not every role that you can find on other film sets.
Oversees and facilitates the entire production.
Can be responsible for:
Organizing the overall production
Securing funding and locations
Making sure things on set run smoothly
Coordinating crew amenities
Creates the story and script of the film. Can provide ideas for vision of the “look” or “mood” of a film.
Guides the creative vision for a production. Directs the cast and crew in the creation of the film.
Creates the filming schedule, and sees to it being adhered to on set. Checks in with all other crew roles to make sure they are functioning efficiently, and to see if they need anything.
In charge of the visual framing of the film. Creates shot lists and storyboards in collaboration with the director. Oversees camera operation, lighting, and set layout to achieve a desired look.
Operates the camera through the direction of the DP. Delegates technical tasks to ACs as needed.
Help the CO in the operation of the camera. Assists in setup, lens and battery swaps, focus pulls, etc. Responsible for slating shots.
The head lighting technician. Works with the DP in order to accomplish required lighting setups. Plans and coordinates the placement and powering of lights.
Works with the gaffer in order to accomplish the required lighting setup. Helps to manipulate and adjust the lighting to help achieve the desired look.
Operates the boom microphone. Decides on the placement of the boom and any other microphones around set and on performers.
In charge of all recordings of sound on the day of shooting. Responsible for making sure mics are recording, and all sound is properly and clearly recorded.
Responsible for the dressing of sets and the sourcing of props for a production. Oversees the use of props by talent. Keeps track of prop placement between takes and shots to ensure continuity.
Responsible for the wardrobe of on-screen talent. Works with the director to choose, source, and fit garments.
Responsible for the cosmetics of talent. Works with the director and costuming to create the needed looks for a production. Performs touch-ups as needed between shots, and keeps cosmetics consistent between shoot days. Alters cosmetics as needed according to continuity.
Responsible for managing continuity in every recorded shot. Makes sure dialogue and kinesis adhere to the script and to what was intended to be captured in each shot. Keeps track of the placement of talent and props between takes.
Provides a helping hand anywhere needed on the production. Examples of PA work:
Filling in for an AC or a grip if a crew member is missing or they need an extra hand
Filling out sound and camera reports
Moving/retrieving equipment
Being on "firewatch" - watching equipment while the crew is away
And much more!
Takes the recorded material and constructs it into a film under the direction and according to the vision of the director and DP.
