EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND. Chun-che Chang received his bachelor’s degree from the Department of Agricultural Chemistry at National Taiwan University (NTU), followed by a master’s degree in science from NTU’s Institute of Biological Chemistry. Prior to pursuing his Ph.D. studies in the United Kingdom, he was awarded a prestigious scholarship sponsored by Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. He also considers his two years of military service in the Marine Corps, along with post-military training at the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau Academy, as an integral part of his educational journey.
ACADEMIC TRAINING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT. Supported by a government scholarship, Chun-che Chang completed his Ph.D. at the Wellcome/CRC Institute (now the Gurdon Institute) and the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge, UK. Inspired by his Ph.D. supervisor, Professor Michael Akam, he began his scientific journey in evolutionary and developmental biology, focusing on germ cell specification in the grasshopper Schistocerca gregaria. Following postdoctoral training in human genetics at the University of Leicester, UK, and in zebrafish developmental biology at Academia Sinica in Taiwan, he joined the Department of Entomology at NTU as a faculty member in 2003. He served as Department Chair from 2016 to 2019 and currently holds dual appointments as Professor and Director of the National Taiwan University Press. Throughout his academic career, Chang has received the NTU Teaching Excellence Award eleven times (2006–2025) and was honored with the Outstanding Teaching Award in 2018.
KEY FINDINGS AND AWARDS. Chang’s contributions to both education and research were first recognized in 2006 when he was named an Outstanding Junior Investigator by NTU’s College of Bio-Resources and Agriculture. His research group has led pioneering studies on developmental gene regulation in asexual (parthenogenetic) and viviparous aphids. In Taiwan, his team established aphids as a model organism for developmental biology. At the molecular level, they discovered the presence of germ plasm in uncellularized embryos of asexual aphids—a finding that overturns the long-standing belief that hemimetabolous insects lack maternally-inherited germ plasm for germ cell specification. Chang has been an active member of the International Aphid Genome Consortium (IAGC) since 2008 and is the founder of the Taiwan Aphid Genome Consortium (TAGC). From 2002 to the present, his research has been featured on the covers of international journals nine times. Two of these cover images were selected as iconic representations by their respective journals, underscoring the international recognition of his scientific identity and innovation. Since January 2024, Chang has served on the editorial board of Developmental Biology, a journal of the Society for Developmental Biology. In October 2024, he began his term as Associate Editor of Insect Molecular Biology. In April 2025, Chang was elected a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society (FRES), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of entomology.
在政府獎學金的資助下,張俊哲於英國劍橋大學遺傳學系與 Wellcome/CRC Institute(現為 Gurdon Institute)完成博士學位。
(Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, FRES)。
