For my community project my cooperative teacher and I decided to involve the fifth- graders in something special for our Taos Community. We asked the students for some suggestions and surprisingly they wanted to donate to our local Animal shelter, Stray Hearts. After speaking with Stray Hearts Animal Shelter, they informed us that they needed many items, ranging from medical supplies, food, blankets, kennels, toys, and many other things.
Before, we let our students know that we were in communication with the animal shelter, we had to ask the Director of Taos International, if it was okay, for our students to take a walking field trip to Stray Hearts and personally deliver our donated items to them. Director Vigil agreed and we began to plan and prepare for our upcoming field trip.
The students and their families were excited. We were able to gather a lot of items for the animals. We were given a tour of their Animal Shelter. The students learned that the shelter was at full capacity. They learned that many of the animals at the shelter were lost or brought in by families who could know longer care for them. After our tour of the animal shelter, our students were excited and content knowing that they were able to do something special for the animals.
