What is therapy?
Therapy is a method of healing. It is the dynamic process of meeting with a therapist to process your inner world and to identify and understand the barriers getting in the way of living a full and meaningful life. Within the context of the therapeutic relationship, new skills and patterns are developed and practiced. There are many different approaches to therapy. Who goes to therapy?
All kinds of people utilize therapeutic services. Individuals, couples, and families can find it helpful to talk to someone about their past, present, and future. In recent years, the stigma that has been associated with going to therapy has lessened. People seek out therapy to find support through difficult experiences, reduce stress, improve communication skills and relationships, engage in self-exploration, and/or manage mental disorders.
How long is each session?
Each therapy session is about 50 minutes long. The initial consultation is often closer to an hour long.
How frequently should I plan to go?
This is completely up to you. Most folks find it beneficial to begin by going on a weekly basis, while the therapeutic relationship is forming. Some people seek therapy during particular chapters of life, then take a break for a while. Others find it helpful to have a consistent opportunity to talk things through for many years.
What are the benefits?
Studies show that verbalizing our feelings decreases the intensity of our sadness, anger and pain. When we articulate our inner experiences, and give them a name and a shape, they can feel more manageable. Therapy can help us to understand and normalize the parts of life that feel most challenging, resulting in feeling less alone and more confident. Moreover, the techniques and tools developed within the therapeutic process outlast the process of therapy. The changes made within the process of therapy can have a lifelong impact.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes, I do! E-therapy, sometimes referred to as telehealth, is a service that allows sessions to take place remotely. Through audio and video over the internet, we can meet for therapy sessions from the comfort of your own home or office. Video calls take place through a professional platform called Simple Practice, and are accessible from your computer, tablet, or cell phone. Many people appreciate the convenience and accessibility of the online platform. If in-person sessions create barriers for you, feel free to email me at christine.a.houghton@gmail.com and we can talk more about video sessions.
