Snow Throughfall: This is the portion of snow that passes through a canopy of vegetation without hitting the canopy and straight to the ground. Throughfall is essential to the snowpack in many areas, including forested areas, and serves as snowmelt runoff and groundwater recharge once temperatures increase.
