Guidance Curriculum

Collaboration With Teachers

As an ideal program I would spend a significant amount of time working on teacher buy-in. Teachers have the opportunity to play a significant role in the effectiveness of guidance curriculum. Teachers spend a large percentage of time with the students compared to counselors considering the difference in ratio. For example counselor to student ratio is around 1:350 and teacher to student ratio may be 1:150.

Teachers are:

  • at the front line facilitating guidance curriculum lessons provided by the district and/or counseling team

  • able to identify students who are in crisis and seeking response services

  • encouraging students in their individual planning as they inspire students in their daily lessons

  • keeping record of students’ progress and needs

Therefore, I find it is imperative to provide teachers and staff with the appropriate training and support when it comes to implementing a successful guidance curriculum. Let's not forget how important the teachers are to the success of this program. Keeping in mind that guidance curriculum is considered a Tier 1 and Tier 2 intervention and implemented in large group settings in the classroom.
