Guidance Curriculum
Collaboration With Teachers
As an ideal program I would spend a significant amount of time working on teacher buy-in. Teachers have the opportunity to play a significant role in the effectiveness of guidance curriculum. Teachers spend a large percentage of time with the students compared to counselors considering the difference in ratio. For example counselor to student ratio is around 1:350 and teacher to student ratio may be 1:150.
Teachers are:
at the front line facilitating guidance curriculum lessons provided by the district and/or counseling team
able to identify students who are in crisis and seeking response services
encouraging students in their individual planning as they inspire students in their daily lessons
keeping record of students’ progress and needs
Therefore, I find it is imperative to provide teachers and staff with the appropriate training and support when it comes to implementing a successful guidance curriculum. Let's not forget how important the teachers are to the success of this program. Keeping in mind that guidance curriculum is considered a Tier 1 and Tier 2 intervention and implemented in large group settings in the classroom.
