Catholic students find faith, friends in new MacEwan group

University can be a student’s first taste of independence or their first time away from home. For Catholic students, it can also be a time that makes or breaks their faith. “It’s an important time to catch people. It’s when they have the choice to make their faith their own,” says Kellie O’Toole, who co-founded Catholics on Campus at MacEwan University

Catholics on Campus offers students a place to share and grow their Catholic identity through fellowship, twice-a-week faith studies and the occasional off-campus event.

O’Toole and Katy Offenberger, both sophomores at MacEwan University, started recruiting for Catholics on Campus at MacEwan University in the fall at an open house that featured all student groups. Now there are 16 students signed up for fellowship and faith studies. Topics include the love of God, the divinity of Christ, the Bible, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

In December 2018, O’Toole and Offenberger attended a Catholic Christian Outreach ministry conference in Calgary and signed up for the Connect program, which encourages university students to start faith studies.

With the CCO’s help, O’Toole and Offenberger took the reins and established Catholics on Campus. By June of this year they received approvals from the university and the Edmonton Archdiocese and in September held their first event, Theology on Tap, in which students talk about faith over beers.

Catholics on Campus plan to continue their faith studies and make Theology on Tap a monthly event. For more information on Catholics on Campus, contact them on Instagram, Facebook or via email at ccmu2019@gmail.com.

Camp Encounter and Our Lady of Victory Camp

Planning for the redevelopment of Camp Encounter and Our Lady of Victory Camp is under way, and first steps have been taken toward site preparation at Camp Encounter.

The Archbishop has appointed a committee to oversee this work, with Lucy Kaakyo of the Office of Lay Apostolate serving as Chair. Committee members see their service as an exciting opportunity to grow our camping ministry in a sustainable way that will continue to build community and support the Church’s evangelizing mission, particularly with our precious young people and their families.

One piece of unexpected good news: some structures from Camp Encounter are finding a new home on the Lac Ste Anne Pilgrimage site.

Updates:

  • An Update on Camps Renewal Project

Planning for the redevelopment of the two archdiocesan camps has entered a new phase with the Archbishop’s approval of a 10-year business plan for the renewal project and resumption of operations at Our Lady of Victory Camp for the 2020 camping season.

Archbishop Smith reiterated his commitment to OLVC and Camp Encounter at the first annual Archbishop’s Dinner on October 4, noting that they have played life-shaping and life-changing roles in the lives of many of the young people who have attended the camps.

On October 30, the Camps Renewal Committee presented His Grace and archdiocesan leaders with a concrete plan for moving forward. The plan calls for $5 million in capital improvements to both sites, to be completed in three phases as the required funds are raised. We are pleased to report that this plan has now been reviewed and approved.

Adoremus @StJosephBasilicaAdoremus

Adoremus

Monthly evenings at St. Joseph's Basilica with the opportunity for Confession, Adoration and for encountering the Beautiful through Sacred Music.

“Adoremus” is a Latin word that means “Let us adore.” And that’s exactly what we want to do. These evenings at St. Joseph Basilica will be a time to encounter Christ through Eucharistic Adoration, Scripture, Confession, and Benediction. We will meet once per month to adore the Lord from 7:30 till 9:00 pm, with the opportunity to socialize afterwards. This is a chance to deepen your relationship with the Lord, and to meet other people doing the same thing.

Mission: To spread love and devotion for Christ in the Eucharist.

Since the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted in 1948, the right to an adequate standard of living, including food, clothing and housing, has been recognized as a fundamental human right.

There are 30 articles in the Human Rights Declaration. I will talk about some of them.

A good part of the world population does not enjoy any of these rights.

9. Presumption of innocence You are considered innocent until it can be proved you are guilty according to law. If accused of a crime you have the right to a defense.

10. Right to privacy You have the right to protection if someone tried to harm your good name, enter your home without permission or interfere with your correspondence.

A listing of Edmonton and area events and prayer services for those interested in musical, ecumenical prayer in the style of Taizé, France. Please share!

Taizé is a tiny village hidden in the hills of Burgundy in eastern France. Since 1940 it has been the home of an ecumenical community of brothers whose prayer, three times a day, is at the centre of their life. The Taizé community welcomes pilgrims of all ages and nationalities and its desire is to create reconciliation and trust in the world.

In Edmonton Taizé Prayer is usually an ecumenical, musical, meditative hour of silence, song, and prayer that is open to all Christians. When we pray in the style of Taizé, short chants, sometimes in different languages, are repeated many times to create a meditative atmosphere in which we can hear God speaking to our souls.

Grandin Media

An online news portal from a Catholic angle

If you haven’t already checked out the new digital news portal of the Archdiocese of Edmonton, please do so by visiting: www.grandinmedia.ca

Grandin Media is an ambitious online news portal. It reflects the beauty of our faith across schools, workplaces and society as a whole, highlighting how we’re living our Catholic faith journey.

Our goal is inform, to inspire, to evangelize and to fill a gaping and persistent hole on the Canadian news media scene – the Catholic angle and the portrayal of our faith as we know it. Instead of having the secular media define what it means to be a Catholic and to live out our faith, we’re doing it ourselves. We’re providing news where the faith hasn’t been edited out. It’s in fact at the forefront.

∗ we also attend weekend Masses together and will participate in “Dismissal” at Mass. What is Dismissal? After the homily we, as RCIA participants, are called forward and the priest will say a blessing over the inquirers, sponsors and catechists and we are "dismissed" to go and study the Word of God that we just heard in the readings during Mass.

Season of Creation

From September 1 to October 4, Christians around the world will celebrate the Season of Creation. This is the annual occasion to pray and commit to actions of care for our common home, Earth.

Learn more and find resources for the season at seasonofcreation.org.

Global Catholic Climate Movement

Global Catholic Climate Movement works within the Catholic Church to better care for our common home.  Our founding document is Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change and ecology, Laudato Si’. We are guided by a set of core values.

Our goals

GCCM aims to enable the Catholic community to bring Laudato Si’ to life in the three dimensions of the climate crisis:

SPIRITUAL DIMENSION:

– The papal call to action: “We must therefore encourage and support the ‘ecological conversion’ which has made humanity more sensitive to the catastrophe to which it has been heading” (St John Paul II).

– GCCM’s goal: to enable an ecological conversion of the Catholic faithful, a “change of heart” that can motivate an integral ecology and a more passionate concern for God’s creation.

LIFESTYLE DIMENSION:

– The papal call to action: “Humanity is called to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat this warming” and “highly polluting fossil fuels need to be progressively replaced without delay.” (Pope Francis, LS 23, 165).

– GCCM’s goal: to help the Catholic family lead by example and dramatically shrink its collective carbon footprint.

PUBLIC SPHERE DIMENSION:

– The papal call to action: “The Church has a responsibility towards creation and she must assert this responsibility in the public sphere… She must above all protect mankind from self-destruction.” (Pope Benedict XVI, Caritas in Veritate 51)

– GCCM’s goal: to raise a loud and prophetic voice critiquing the “unlimited growth” paradigm and calling for bold policies to advance 100% renewable energy.

40 Days for Life (Respect for Life)

40 Days for Life - Sept. 25 - Nov. 3, 2019

The fall campaign of 40 Days for Life runs from Sept. 25 - Nov. 3. 40 Days for Life is a pro-life prayer campaign that includes prayer & fasting, prayer vigil, and community outreach. The most visible component is the prayer vigil, which takes place outside the abortion facility.

We hope you will be able to spend some time praying outside the abortion clinic (Woman's Health Options - 12409-109 A Ave, Edmonton). Because of the new access zone law, we need to be at least 50 metres away from the abortion facility. If you would like to see the access zone map (showing where we can stand), please contact us and we will email it to you.

If you would like a sign, they are available here at the office (212, 11125-107 Ave., Edmonton). They are also available at St. Andrew's Centre (12720 - 111 Ave., Edmonton) in the foyer, under the literature table.

Please join us in prayer, fasting, peaceful vigils and community outreach to protect mothers and their children from abortion.

For opportunities to serve in vigil, please contact Lori at 780-425-1637 or info@edmontonprolife.org and visit 40daysforlife.com/Edmonton.

Respect for Life . . .

“Every child who, rather than being born, is condemned unjustly to being aborted, bears the face of Jesus Christ, bears the face of the Lord, who even before he was born, and then just after birth, experienced the world’s rejection.

And every elderly person… even if he is ill or at the end of his days, bears the face of Christ. They cannot be discarded, as the ‘culture of waste’ suggests!” -Pope Francis -

Speech to Catholic healthcare professionals & gynecologists Sep 20, 2013

Catholic Health Alliance of Canada ~ Proclaim and Awaken video

Celebrating Catholic Health Care

From October 6 to 12, 2019 we will celebrate the very first National Catholic Health Care Week.

This week organized by the Catholic Health Alliance of Canada provides the opportunity to highlight the inspiring work of Catholic health care organizations, such as Covenant Health and Covenant Care, both within the Archdiocese of Edmonton and across Canada.

At the heart of Catholic health care is a deep respect for the intrinsic value and dignity of every human being and an unwavering commitment to serving all people, from all backgrounds and faiths – especially society’s most vulnerable.

Prayers of the Faithful

During National Catholic Health Care Week, we pray for our Catholic hospitals, seniors care centers, social services and other health care agencies. May they continue to provide healing and give strength to the people and communities they serve.

During National Catholic Health Care Week, we pray for the physicians, nurses, employees, volunteers and all who serve our Catholic health care institutions. May they reflect the face of Jesus as they care for those experiencing illness, disability, and end of life.

During National Catholic Health Care Week, we pray for those who are receiving care in our Catholic health care facilities, especially those who are most vulnerable. May they find empathy, compassion, and the love of God in the midst of health difficulties, and may they see they face of God in those who provide support.

National Catholic Health Care Week is a celebration of our unwavering commitment to serve Canadians, journeying with people throughout their lives, and offering healing in body, mind, and spirit.

We have cared for people in small towns and urban centres for 400 years. Catholic women of faith laid the foundation for today’s health system. They were driven by audacious bravery, steadfast belief in the sacredness of each person, and unshakeable willingness to offer love and hope.

Catholic health care starts with a spiritual purpose: a deep-rooted calling to serve everyone and to come to each other with vulnerability.

Today, Catholic health care is flourishing. We continue the legacy of the Sisters, working closely with funders and partners to be responsive to the changing and growing needs of individuals and families across the country. We are leaders and advocates, making the health system stronger.

We may be 400 years old, but we’ve only just begun.

Extraordinary Missionary Month 2019

#MyMission

#OurMission

In the lead-up to the Extraordinary Missionary Month in October, the Society for the Propagation of the Faith has launched the Canadian component of an international social media campaign, “My mission is.”

The society (whose works are supported by our gifts through Together We Serve)invites Canadian Catholics to participate in the campaign by using the official template to write down what they believe is their life’s mission, in as few words as possible. Participants must then post a picture or video of themselves with their mission to their social accounts using the hashtag, #MyMission, while challenging others to do the same.

“We all have a special mission in life, which we carry out in love and solidarity,” said Father Alex Osei, national director of Pontifical Mission Societies for English Canada. “Our hope is to remind people of all ages that they are called to mission, through their baptism, and that God will give them the graces to live their mission to go out and preach the Good News of Christ, through deeds and words, to all the ends of the earth.”

The campaign has two phases. The theme, “My mission is”, will take place during August and September, with the second theme “Our Mission is,” taking place during the month of October.

To help Catholics prepare for the Extraordinary Missionary Month, Society for the Propagation of the Faith has developed a long list of resources, including a 15 page manual.

The Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019

“Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World”

October is the month of evangelization

“Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World” is the theme chosen by Pope Francis for the Extraordinary Mission Month. Awakening the awareness of the missio ad gentes, and reinvigorating the sense of responsibility for proclaiming the Gospel with new enthusiasm, are themes that combine the pastoral concern of Pope Benedict XV in his Apostolic Letter Maximum Illud, published 100 years ago, with the missionary vitality expressed by Pope Francis in his recent Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium: “Missionary action is the paradigm of every work of the Church.” (EG 15)

How to Live the Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019

There are four dimensions, specified by the Pope, to live more intensely the journey of preparation for the Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019:

  1. A personal encounter with Jesus Christ alive in His Church through the Eucharist, the Word of God, personal and communal prayer;

  2. Testimony: missionary saints, martyrs and confessors of the faith, as an expression of the Church scattered throughout the world;

  3. Missionary formation: biblical, catechetical, spiritual and theological;

  4. Missionary charity.

Extraordinary Mission Month Opening Mass

All are welcome to join Archbishop Richard Smith for the opening Mass for the Extraordinary Mission Month on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Basilica.

Pope Francis proclaimed an Extraordinary Missionary Month to be celebrated October 2019: “Baptized and Sent, the Church of Christ on Mission in the World.”

The Holy Father invites us to live each day with Jesus in the same understanding as when He Commissioned of the Disciples, where he says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28: 19-20).

Pope Francis writes: “May the Extraordinary Missionary Month prove an intense and fruitful occasion of grace, and promote initiatives and above all prayer, the soul of all missionary activity. May it likewise advance the preaching of the Gospel, works of Christian charity, and practical works of cooperation and solidarity between Churches, so that missionary zeal may revive and never be wanting among us.”

Prayer proposed by Pope Francis for the Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019

Heavenly Father, when Your only begotten Son Jesus Christ rose from the dead, he commissioned his followers to “go and make disciples of all nations” and You remind us that through our Baptism we are made sharers in the mission of the Church.

Empower us by the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be courageous and zealous in bearing witness to the Gospel, so that the mission entrusted to the Church, which is still very far from completion, may find new and efficacious expressions that bring life and light to the world.

Help us make it possible for all peoples to experience the saving love and mercy of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen.

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID)/ Physician Assisted Suicide

2016 Statement on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide

2016 Guidelines for the Celebration of the Sacraments with Persons and Families Considering or Opting for Death by Assisted Suicide or Euthanasia

Bishops urge Catholics to demand end to euthanasia law as Ottawa seeks its expansion -

Read more in Grandin Media

The Government of Canada has launched an online public consultation aimed at obtaining Canadian's views on amending the federal medical assistance in dying legislation. Canadians and interested stakeholders are invited to share their views online until January 27, 2020.

In response to a recent ruling of the Superior Court of Quebec

As the Canadian government prepares to expand access to euthanasia, the Catholic Bishops of Alberta have written a Pastoral Letter to the faithful on this subject. In Remaining True to Christ Now and at the Hour of our Death, they offer a thoughtful reflection on Catholic teaching regarding respect for life and our responsibility to remain faithful to God's will. All of us will need support at the time of our dying, they write, but assistance to hasten our death, the willful termination of a human life, is a very different matter. The letter offers words of encouragement on preparing for a holy death, and also calls on Catholics to contact their MPs to oppose any expansion of the current law and advocate instead for more access to palliative care.

The time is NOW. We need your support as we rebuild this Holy Site for the future of our Catholic families.

  • The Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton is now the owner, in trust, of the properties and facilities at the Lac Ste. Anne Pilgrimage Site. GREAT NEWS!

  • Catholic Family Ministries has been asked to participate as members of  a new Lac Ste. Anne Facility Committee. Future planning strongly reflects the NEEDS of our CFM Conference!

  • This  committee has been tasked with developing a plan that identifies the immediate, the current and the future facility needs at the Pilgrimage Site.

  • An initial assessment identified that most of the buildings have gone beyond their life span and are being demolished and/or replaced. THANK YOU, LORD!

  • An opportunity has arisen that will provide the site with several buildings that would more than adequately serve the site as the longer term plans are developed. These buildings will be available for use by CFM during the conferences for several years.

  • The Archdiocese has approached CFM, asking if our CFM community would be willing to pledge $150,000.00 to finance the move and setup of these buildings.

  • We have been praying for an opportunity like this for 24 years, so without hesitation we said 'YES!'

WE ARE PRAYING FOR YOUR HELP and encourage everyone to donate towards this $150,000 ASK for the rebuilding of the site. Below are ways you can donate.

• Pledge cards will be available at the conference.

• You may also donate through our website at www.catholicfamilyministries.com. Donate Online

• You can mail a donation marked SITE DONATION, cheques payable to:

Father Michael “Catfish” Mireau Youth Faith Day

Legacy and mission of ‘Father Catfish’ live on for next generation

The life and legacy of Father Michael ‘Catfish’ Mireau, who used pop culture references and Star Wars lightsabers to teach the faith, continue to stir hearts of young and old.

It’s been six years since Mireau, affectionately known as Father Catfish, died of cancer at age 42 — a battle he documented himself.

Father Michael "Catfish" Mireau used pop culture and superhero themes to reach out to young people.

Father Mireau never shied away from bringing his energetic personality or his love of pop culture into his priesthood. As a chaplain to Edmonton Catholic Schools, he would often show up for school masses in a Roman collar and Superman T-shirt, with his dog Nemo by his side. It was not unusual for Mireau, a huge Star Wars fan,  to pull out a lightsaber during his homilies.

Home Support for Edmonton Seniors

The Greater Edmonton Alliance, which is endorsed and supported by the Archdiocese, has played an instrumental role in the creation of the Seniors Home Supports Program. The program meets the real needs of seniors in their homes today: the soft supports such as yard help, snow removal, housekeeping, and home repair and maintenance, among other services. This program is available to all seniors. It might not be for you, but it could very well be for someone you know: a family member, a friend, a neighbour. We invite you to share the following program resources with your parish or community. If you have questions, please contact Ken Bracke at 780-450-3138.

For more information, you can also visit www.seniorshomesupports.com.

Helping Seniors Stay in the Community

Do you need help around the home, but don’t know who to call? The Seniors Home Supports Program gives Edmonton seniors referrals to service providers offering snow removal, yard help, housekeeping, minor home repair and maintenance, personal services, and moving help. Six seniors organizations screen businesses, community groups, and individuals and provide referrals. Referrals are free, but seniors pay for the work that is done. Visit www.SeniorsHomeSupports.com or call 211 to find out which organization serves your area of the city.
