BUSOBA 7253 - Sustainable Operations

Businesses contribute to global environmental issues, such as climate change, water pollution, and waste, but they can also be part of the solution. We will explore some of the challenges and opportunities firms face in managing their environmental impact. Some firms adopt environmental management practices to cut cost; others pursue them to differentiate themselves. If the benefits of sustainability were obvious and easy to pursue, then why do we not observe all firms implementing the same strategy? We will explore and debate the potential of firms to contribute to global sustainability.

We will explore emerging topics in sustainable operations management through cases, team debates, lectures, guest speakers, and student presentations. Topics include carbon footprinting, waste reduction, new sustainable business models, transparency, remanufacturing, and closed-loop supply chains. We will examine the sustainable operations and supply chain strategies of different companies such as Greendust, Interface, and John Deere.
