To become an operational field member, these are the requirements:
Good level of fitness
General outdoor ability (background in tramping, hunting, Defence Force, other services, etc.)
Map reading and navigation knowledge
Search techniques (LandSAR course)
Tracking techniques (LandSAR course)
Current first aid certificate (LandSAR course or other provider)
The first two criteria are a requirement and the third an advantage, the others will be learned during LandSAR training courses. We also need to know that your lifestyle is flexible and allows you to attend operational callouts. These callouts can occur at any time day or night, weekday or weekend. The reality is that we average 2-4 callouts per year. We appreciate that at certain times operational members are not able to respond due to work or family commitments but if you cannot attend any callouts (i.e. you are always unavailable during work hours, evenings and weekends) then this is not for you.
Again, thanks for your interest and we may be in touch soon.
