The CHIP Research Group partners with Special Olympics Nebraska to offer inclusive community-based physical activity opportunities through the UNO Young Athletes program. These programs are housed on site in the Health & Kinesiology building at UNO.
UNO Young Athletes is a free, inclusive sports and physical activity program designed to bring children together to have fun and develop gross motor skills. The program is offered once a week for 8 weeks, and each week is focused on a different gross motor skill. Children engage in small and large group activities so that they can practice motor skills and engage in high levels of physical activity. In 2024 our focus was on children ages 3-5 years, but recently expanded our programming to include infants and toddlers (9 months - 2 years), preschool-aged children (2-4 years), and school-aged children (5-7 years).
Our community-based programs depend on support from volunteers (UNO students, local high school students, etc.) and we do our best to provide one-on-one opportunities for our young athletes who may need additional support. These programs also provide great internship and practicum opportunities.
