Dr. Michaela Schenkelberg is an Omaha native and an associate professor in the School of Health and Kinesiology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She earned aMaster's of Public Health from Kansas State University and a doctorate in exercise science from the Arnold School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Schenkelberg's research focuses on physical activity and health promotion for individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). She is especially interested in understanding how features of the social and physical environment can shape behavior and influence health outcomes.
Dr. Schenkelberg is a 2015-2016 South Carolina Leadership in Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (SC LEND) Fellow, serves on the Special Olympics Nebraska Board of Directors, and coaches UNO Young Athletes and her children's recreational soccer team. She is an avid gardener and enjoys other creative outlets including baking sourdough and crocheting. She especially loves to spend time hiking, camping, and being outdoors with her husband, three young children, and family pets.

Kaela Di Giulio, BS | Graduate Assistant
Kaela Di Giulio is a master’s student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha studying Public Health in the Health and Kinesiology Department. Di Giulio is a graduate assistant contributing to research and academic initiatives alongside Dr. Schenkelberg, with a focus on physical activity and nutrition promotion for young children with Down syndrome and intellectual/developmental disabilities. Di Giulio aims to utilize her experiences in research and education in public health to guide her on the path to medical school.
