I want to welcome you to our online community. My name is Donna Cecil and I will be here to facilitate, guide and support you during our time together. You will soon realize that I am passionate about the field of child development. In my opinion, this course helps everyone understand how we grow and develop as humans.
We are all human. We all begin life the same way. It is the push and pull of nature and nurture that makes each of us unique. At the end of this course, I hope you will see that we are all more alike than different.
This syllabus is designed to be mobile-friendly and provide you with essential information to support you with a successful start in this course. This course will follow a weekly schedule and is conducted like a "real class". That means you will regularly log into the class, and interact with peers and myself several times a week (we will use discussions and other tools outlined in our Canvas course). We may be online at different times, but we will be a part of a community. This community will allow us to learn from one another and support one another as we work toward success in the class.
This is a fully online 8 week course.
The course begins on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 and ends on Saturday, August 13, 2022.
We have no regularly scheduled meeting times (we will not meet in Zoom). All of your work will be completed asynchronously (on your own time) in Canvas.
This is not a self-paced course. You will learn in a community with your classmates and me! We are in this together.
This course is organized into eight 1-week modules, which will always open on a Monday morning.
You will need to log on the first day of class and complete the initial discussion by Saturday, June 25.
Be proactive. Log into our course every Monday. Review the module. Start the reading assignments, assess the workload, and put the due dates on your calendar. Having a mental picture of what's ahead is the best thing you can do to prepare each week.
Plan for the unexpected. Aim to have all of your assignments done by 24 hours before they are due. Why? Because life happens and when you wait until the last minute, you're more likely to have problems meeting due dates.
Communicate with me. If you identify a challenge meeting a due date, contact me right away. I am willing to be flexible. Contacting me in advance of a due date will keep you and me in sync and ensure you don't get overwhelmed by unfinished work.
Take ownership. Life is complicated and messy, but there are areas you can control. Do not assume I know what is going on in your life or some other aspect. Communicate with me and if needed your peers.
Be kind. Online discussions present unique challenges. We cannot see each other's faces or expressions. Think before you respond. Carefully read what you have written before responding to a peer. If you are unsure, have someone else read it. When you read something, do not assume it is negative. The English language is complicated and messy. If it is not someone's first language, they may not understand that certain words seem aggressive or accusatory.
Breathe. Just take a breath, walk away, sing, dance, meditate.
