Campus Well-Being
Fighting for an increased minimum wage for university-employed workers, indexed to $1.20 above the state minimum wage
We will achieve this by increasing the price of sporting event tickets, parking, and concessions by a small percentage. These price increases would largely not affect the student body, as students get tickets for free and already have parking passes. These areas draw nearly $3,000,000 for BGSU a year, and a small increase in these prices will provide an avenue for students to receive a much needed pay increase.
Fighting to enhance student feedback in funding of student organizations and preserve the integrity, sovereignty, and funding of these bodies from potential budget cuts.
Working to ensure that student organization are able to operate with financial freedom and make their own decisions regarding the direction and mission of the organization.
Establishing a per-semester report on what actions USG is taking to improve the student experience and hold ourselves accountable to student concerns.
This event dubbed the State of the Cunion (Campus - Union) will directly address the student body, enable them to hear directly from their elected leadership, and provide the opportunity to ask questions or express their concerns.
Working to ensure the Counseling Center has adequate resources to respond to students' needs
As the BGSU Counceling center embarks on the difficult task to replace their director we want to give them all the focus and attention they need to continue their invalablue service to the student body.
Extending the deadlines for students to be able to declare a course Pass/Fail and conducting in-depth review of grade scale in an effort to remove arbitrary letter grade cutoffs.
Senator Chiarelott has already successfully implemented Pass/Fail grade changes for 3 Semesters (Spring 2020, Summer 2020, and Fall 2020) and is working to get it implemented for Spring 2021. His trusted guidance and leadership will ensure that a fair and equitable grade scale will be the focus of campus leadership.
As a result of the 2008 Recession and the COVID-19 Pandemic, college enrollment rates have fallen off, and we will work to ensure that we adapt to reduced enrollment in ways that do not detract from the student experience.
We will achieve this by offering innovative new programs for students such as Resort and Attraction Management and implementing the Designing Your Life Philosophies
Working to establish a process by which no individual is cut off from the benefits of higher education due to financial constraints: BG1 Day will secure donations and funding for students in need of financial assistance.
We have an actionable plan to provide compensation to unpaid student teachers, who work 40+ hours a week, driving up to 140 miles daily. We will work to expand the gas card program by attaching applications to field placement and cohort update emails and we will continue on to provide senior Education majors a grant during the final year of their program as a form of compensation. The revenue to pay for these measure will be raised through alumni and charitable donations, fundraising through a variety of methods, and a small optional fee on the student body to end this unpaid labor.
COVID-19 Response
Working with the University to establish a plan and reliably inform the student population about vaccine distribution, class format, and other related COVID policies.
Regular communication with BGSU Chief Health Officer Ben Batey will be a key component of this task force.
Working diligently to return to normal campus operations in accordance with essential CDC mask-wearing and social distancing guidelines to provide the unique BGSU experience.
In the Fall we hope to return with a mostly vaccinated student population that will allow sporting events to return and campus organizations to have safe in person meetings.
Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives
This class would ensure that the student population remains informed about important, contemporary issues of diversity on campus and around their communities
With students from many diverse backgrounds and identities coming to BGSU, it is important to ensure that every incoming student feels welcome, seen, heard, and understood, and Freshman Orientation is a great avenue to accomplish this sense of belonging and understanding
Ensure that diverse voices, representative of the entire student population, are heard on the definitive decision-making body within the Undergraduate Student Government
As an inclusive institution of higher education, BGSU should strive to ensure that every individual, regardless of ability, is able to attend, participate in, and experience campus events to their fullest extent. Services will be made available to student organizations free of charge.
Technology Initiatives
Developing a software package that allows BGSU to modify programs to ensure student security and affordability: set a precedent that students come to BGSU for a BGSU education, not some third party education.
Working with the university to author an official statement that demonstrates university commitment to student technology safety, privacy, and accessibility.
Working to find better, more accessible and agreeable alternatives to programs that monitor students taking tests and negatively affect privacy.
Sustainability Initiatives
Enforcing university policy to ensure that printers use 100% recycled content paper as well as working to implement a policy that encourages a reduction in printer usage, setting aside savings for green initiatives.
Working with BGSU Dining and BGSU Campus Sustainability to expand composting activities to post-consumer as well as pre-consumer and to transition the work to on-campus sites to involve student organizations and reduce emissions and cost
Reinstating Friday Night Lights, an initiative to cut down on electricity emissions: it saved over $14,000 for the university while it was active.
Working to transition areas of campus that still use inefficient, costly, and environmentally-unfriendly light sources to LED lighting
Internal USG Overhaul
Evaluate the utility of current cabinet positions and add new positions to address important issues of note on campus, such as a Director of Technology Safety and Privacy, Director of Accessibility, and more.
Adding a permanent commitment to the important cause of representation and inclusion within the apparatus of USG
Sending USG Senators to the Conference on Student Government Associations and Ohio Student Government Association to connect with other student governments, gather new ideas for campus-wide initiatives and programs, and collaborate to achieve wide-scale change
Establish a process to ensure that Senators within USG are appointed to Standing Committees in which they might work on issues that they are passionate about, and establish measures of accountability to ensure Senators are working to pass initiatives and resolutions to benefit the student population.
Scrutinizing the Constitution and Bylaws of USG from the ground up to adapt to the new and changing times, to eliminate redundancies, arbitrary rules and restrictions, and ensure that the real work of USG is not bogged down by bureaucratic slowdown.
Work to expand USG's social media presence to keep the student population informed as to what initiatives and resolutions USG is working on, to open up a channel for communication between USG and the larger student body, and to keep ourselves accountable with a living track record of our progress.
Reach out regularly and respectfully to the BG City Council to collaborate on wider-scale projects that USG and City Council can work together on to accomplish positive change
