CASTLE SCHEDULE POSTED ON ONLINE REGISTRATION
FROSTED THINK Nov. 29-30th
The venue for the Class Championships has moved to the Rochester Civic Center.
This is the same as the Rochester Chess Festival.
October 27 IM Alice Lee led the US Women's Championship for a while but Carissa Yip was not to be denied. Carissa won it again. Alice finished fourth, which is still good considering the competition.
The Senior was played at the Castle. Leonard Johnson, Okey Iwu and Tim Radermacher tied and will have a playoff. Dan Voje won the over 65. Jiten organized and directed keeping this rowdy bunch under control. Picture on the MCA site.
October 17 If you are going to the K-12 Championships it is time to make reservations.
October 13 John Blomer tied for first in the Expert section at the Midwest Class. $675!
IM Alice Lee is playing in the US Women's Championship in St. Louis. I like to watch on Chessbase.
October 6 The Northern Open was won by Sammy Narayanan. 127 players participated in the end of the Grand Prix. Those results are posted.
There is lots of construction in Rochester so leave some time for detours at the Class Championships.
September 24 The Governor's Cup was a modest success. Attendance was down. The site and organizing were great as usual. Sammy Narayanan and GM Isik Can were tied for first. Dane is not the only one that gets to play GMs. Next year it will be in October.
September 16 The results for the Gopher Open are posted. HERE and HERE. It was fun to go back to the University after 50 years.
September 12 Super GM Hikaru Nakamura needs FIDE games to qualify for the Candidates Tournament. He traveled to Louisiana and Iowa to play. He did get to play our own Dane Zagar. Dane did great for the first 25 moves after that Naka just slowly improved his position over the next 25. Details on Chessbase. Gotham Chess goes over the game.
August 29 IM John Bartholomew recently played in the Lichess Lone Wolf League weekly tournament. He Then blogged a YouTube video on his channel. This was unique as he showed his prep, the game and post analysis. Showing the way a titled player prepares for a match. He posted his take away thoughts on Lichess. Worth a look.
The Monday Quads are very strong with over 20 players.
August 25 GM Robby Kevlishvili scored 4.5/5 to take first in the Roger Hale Festival. Dane Zagar and Jordan Timm were second with 4/4. Yusuf Khan and Johan Myburgh were first in the Roger section. Vinay Karthik and Amogh Lohe won the Futures section. Dane's game and more are HERE.
August 21 GM Robby Kevlishvili, pictured, has a busy weekend ahead. He is holding a training camp and Simul on Friday and will hold down board one at the Roger Hale tournament. Over 100 players are entered. This also the 4th Grand Prix Summer event.
July 30 Jordan Timm continued his winning ways. He often finishes first in the Monday Quads but he took his show on the road to Franklin. He was clear first at Catfish Days with 6.5/7. Dane Mattson visiting family was second with 5.5/7. Too many draws for Dane. 28 players. I missed it this year opting for the Senior Open. My highlight was a draw against GM John Fedorowicz.
July 21 IM Sammy Narayanan was perfect in Rochester. Taking clear first. Jorenby and Timm were second. Over 150 total players. Joshini Sudhakar won the women's Championship.
July 1 Dane Zagar tied for first at the Green Bay Open. He got the trophy. Scoring 4.5/5. Pictured with the TD Luke Ludwig and movie star sister Allisun.
GM Robby Kevlishvili is entered in the Roger Hale Chess Celebration. He tied for second in the Philadelphia International. With 5 draws and 4 wins in a very tough field. Will our IMs and GMs accept the challenge? His Chess.com page.
July 13 IM Sammy Narayanan earned his first GM norm in New York. He won the ten player group. You can ask him about all the details in Rochester this coming weekend. He also did very well at the World Open. He was playing for clear first in the last round.
June 25 The Mankato Open was a well run first time tournament. IM Sammy Narayanan was perfect with a 5/5 result. 87 players total. More details on the MSCA site. Next up is Rochester Chess Festival on July 18th-20th.
June 20 I saw a Blog on Lichess about our own IM John Bartholomew playing again. A slower time control of 30 +30. the league is called Lone Wolf. The videos are long but one can pick out just the parts one likes. LoneWolf is a side league of the Lichess4545 league. It is an 11-round Swiss tournament where players play one game per week with a 30+30 time control. For more information about the LoneWolf tournament visit the LoneWolf homepage.
June 19 IM Alice Lee against huge odds managed to take clear second in the Cairns Cup. Missing a GM norm by half a point. She held an incredibly tough last game against the winner Carissa Yip. Alice earned $50,000 on her Summer vacation. Congratulations to Team Alice.
June 10 IM Alice Lee is back in St. Louis at the Cairns Cup. She is the bottom seed so will have a tough time. Watch on Chessbase.
NM Andrew Titus crushed it at the State Blitz Championships scoring 16/18. NM Jackson Wahl was second with 14/18 and John Blomer was third with 13.5/18. 93 players participated. Too fast for us old men.
June 3 There is an article in June's Chess Life on Roger Hale written by Dennis McGrath. I am sure it will be posted at the club for those who do not get the Magazine. This link might work. Roger Hale or this one or read it HERE
October 22 As we know there is no quit in IM Alice Lee. In the tenth round of the US Women's Championship she had the position on the left. It has been assumed a draw for some time but Alice still tries. Alice is White and pushing for a win. Black to move. Is it a win or draw?
The GMs said this was a win for Alice. But wait. Alice will play Rook to f4 and Queen the pawn. Black played 45....Ke5 46.Rf4 Kxf4 47.f7 and the pawn turns into a Queen as the Rook can not get back to stop it.
Black should have played 45...Kd5 46. Rf4 Rb3 47. f7 Rb8 48. f8=Q and the Rook sacrifices it self for the pawn. But now the Black King is close enough to the a pawn and White will have to give up the Rook for the pawn.
Alice showed great technique in converting the Q vs R+p ending. She plays Yip tomorrow going for second place.
She drew Yip and finished in third with a nice payday. Chessbase
June 17 In this position Alice blundered after an hour of playing on increment at the Cairns Cup. Not one to play for a draw in a bad position she played actively. After the mistake the commentators assumed she was lost. As we all know there is no quit in her. With the tricky Knight she struggles on. With brilliant play she draws the game. To play the GIF just refresh the page. I do not know how to auto replay. Chess.com link to the game.
February 5 At the left is a picture of the remodeling that was done after the accident. A huge amount of sewage fell from a broken pipe and covered the floor, tables, sets and clocks. Dane showed me pictures and it was massive. Southdale took no responsibility and it was left to volunteers to fix the problem. Thankfully Roger Hale once again stepped up with carpeting and other items. This was huge. Dane's Dad, Bruno, volunteered his skills at sheet rock repair and all round handyman to help get the club looking great. Many others helped too. The place looks brand new and more tables will be added to get us back to be able to handle bigger events. I advise you to take advantage of one of the best clubs in the nation.
