Chen Lab at ICOB

Zebrafish model in regeneration research

About the Chen Lab

Some vertebrate animals, such as salamanders and zebrafish, are capable of regenerating complex tissues after major injuries. We are excited about the phenomenon- the how and why, and focus our efforts on key knowledge gaps ideally suited for investigation using the zebrafish model. Through the integration of large-scale cell imaging, genetics, and systems-level analyses, we aim to dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms governing the intricate process of regeneration.

Myofiber remodeling during zebrafish development

"This cover highlights the article Whole-body replacement of larval myofibers generates permanent adult myofibers in zebrafish by Uday Kumar, Chen-Hui Chen and colleagues. The image shows the head region of a live zebrafish larva at 10 days post-fertilization, where the fast myofibers have been multicolor-barcoded for long-term monitoring" @EMBO J.

Mechanical first aid for zebrafish

"It is known that mechanical waves play a role in collective motion of cells, including during the healing of wounds. Marco De Leon and collaborators now show that these waves can help an amputated zebrafish know where its fin was cut off, and that this can aid regeneration" @NaturePhysics.
