CHEF Members attend a wide range of events each homeschool year.  Some of these events are available only to CHEF members.  Others are open to all families interested in homeschooling. Please pay us a visit and see what we are all about!

The following activities are open to all interested in homeschooling and thinking about joining CHEF:

Kick-Off Picnic - August

The kick-off picnic is a chance for all of our families to get together, visit, discuss what is happening in our lives, and allow our children to play and have fun.  If you are thinking of joining CHEF, or are a new member, this is a great opportunity to meet people and get to know your fellow home educators!  If you are a veteran member, it is a great time to catch up on what has happened since we last met together.  This is usually a very fun time for all!

Skating - October, December, and February

Three times a year, CHEF families gather at the skating rink, located on Route 60 in Boyd County, for some roller skating fun!  This is typically a much-anticipated event for our children.  It gives them a chance to socialize, exercise, and most importantly, have some fun!

Library Programs - All year

Several local libraries, including the Briggs Library in Ironton and the Greenup Public Library system, host numerous programs and activities for children of all ages throughout the year.  These include the summer reading program and summer reading kick-off.  Many CHEF families take advantage of these programs all year long!

Used Curriculum Sale - June

In June, CHEF families gather together to buy, sell and trade homeschool curriculum materials.  Not only is this is great way to save money, it is an excellent opportunity to visit and fellowship with your fellow homeschooling families!  Susan Harrison is responsible for this wonderful event, and it is always a success!

Paramount Arts Center - All year

All year long, the Paramount Arts Center hosts numerous family-friendly shows for us to enjoy.  CHEF members receive a discount at these shows by showing your CHEF membership card.  This is just another reason why it makes sense to join CHEF!

The following activities are limited to CHEF Members only:

Meetings - These include "Mom's Meetings", where mothers get a chance to visit and discuss issues with one another, and various other planning meetings throughout the year.

Field Trips - As a member of CHEF, one of the most exciting things is participating in the numerous field trips planned by parent volunteers throughout the year.  There is not enough room on the page to describe the amazing things we CHEF parents find to do to teach our kids!  In the past couple of years, we have visited the Kentucky Statehouse and met our representatives, visited Heritage Farm and Museum, held an American History Fair, put on a Thanksgiving play, attended a gun safety class, visited the Kentucky Folk Art Center and Museum....and many, many, many, many more!!

BETA Club - Our BETA Club leaders are Kristie Abshire and Kelli Beaumont.  The National Beta Club is the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization in America. And for more than 80 years, it has prepared today's students to be tomorrow's leaders. Their motto is, "Let Us Lead by Serving Others." Here is a link to the Beta website where you can find the Mission Statement, Constitution, Beta Creed and much more information.

Track and Field Day - For many of our youngsters, the most anticipated event of the year is the track-and-field day at the end of the year.  Each family brings food and drinks.  We have one huge picnic and let our children play and compete in outdoor activities.  Parents and children alike have a chance to visit and fellowship one with another.  What can be better than having a picnic out in the sun, having fun playing games, and visiting with your fellow homeschooling families?

Unit and/or Book Studies - Several times throughout the year, parent volunteers organize book and/or unit studies.  At these studies, parents and children meet at a selected location and discuss a common book being read by the group.  This is an excellent English Language Arts opportunity, not to mention yet another CHEF opportunity for our children to socialize!

Performing Arts & Museum Updates - As a member of CHEF, you will have the privilege of receiving updates about upcoming concerts and events.  And as it was mentioned earlier, you will also be given a discount for being a member of CHEF!
