What can you do to support your child's learning at home?

First Grade Summer Review

Reading:

·       Read for at least 20 minutes daily (read for enjoyment)

·       Identify parts of a book – (title, author, illustrator & table of contents)

·       Monitor reading comprehension

·       Review that stories have settings, characters, problems, resolutions, and conclusions

·       Practice retelling a story in logical order

·       Identify  and read at least 100 high-frequency words : Click Here

·       Review compound words

·       Review the difference between fiction and nonfiction books

·       Identify and read contractions (e.g. isn’t (is not), can’t (cannot), etc.)

·       Review prediction and cause/effect

 Writing:

·       Generate ideas for writing

·       Capitalization and punctuation with spacing between words

·       Review Long Vowel – silent (e) at the end  - e.g. (hope, take, etc.)

·       Practice spelling base words by adding (s) to make them plural

·       Have your child to share his/her writing

·       Make sure ideas are in logical order – does the writing make sense

·       Vowel dipthongs – oy, oi, ou, ow, au, aw, ew

·       Vowel diagraph ie(chief) and igh(sigh, night)

Math:

·       Identify U.S. coins and their value

·       Skip counting by 2, 5, and 10

·       Practice counting forward and backward

·       Practice numbers greater than, less than, equal to

·       Continue to practice basic math facts (addition and subtraction)

·       Practice writing word problems

·       2D shapes: circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, rectangles, rhombuses, and hexagons

·       3D shapes: spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prism, cubes, triangular prisms

·       Be able to show equal parts (halves and fourths)

·       Practice fact families

·       Practice place value to the hundreds place

·       Practice reading graphs (bar graph, line graph, etc.)

·       Practice non-standard measurement – with cubes, ribbon, string, etc.

·       Practice time to the hour and ½ hour (both digital and analog clocks)

·       Discuss earning and saving money, needs and wants and charitable giving
