I'm Ryan Kent, a middle school art and science teacher. Like every teacher, I've spent more of my day than I'd like saying "OK, let's bring the volume down please." I wanted something that let my students see the noise level for themselves, without me stopping the lesson or posting a timer that takes over the whole screen. Nothing I found worked the way a real classroom works, so I built Chatter Check.
Chatter Check is a free Chrome extension that adds a small noise meter to the edge of whatever you're already projecting: your slides, a video, a Google Doc. It listens to the room and shows the volume as it rises and falls. Green means good, yellow means getting loud, red means it's time to reset. Your students can see it, and you don't have to say a word.
Chatter Check shows a simple meter on your screen that rises from green to red as the room gets louder. Students see it and adjust on their own, so you can keep teaching without stopping to ask for quiet.
Pick the style that fits your class:
Bars: a bright column of lights that rise from green to red. On the top or bottom of the screen it becomes a calm row of upright columns with a “too loud” line.
Subtle: a thin, quiet stripe for classes that get distracted easily. It stays still and only changes color: green is good, yellow is okay, orange is trouble, red is too loud.
Bubbles: calm blue and purple bubbles that drift slowly when the room is quiet, then grow, speed up and turn red when it gets too loud.
Dial: a draggable emoji face, gauge or stoplight. Use the size slider to make it as small or as big as you like.
Put it on the left, right, top or bottom of the screen. The web page moves over so the meter never covers your work, and it works in full screen too.
