ChatterBox Privacy Policy
Effective date: 10/01/2026
ChatterBox: Classroom Noise Meter ("ChatterBox," "the extension") is a free Google Chrome extension created and maintained by Ryan Kent ("I," "me"). This policy explains what ChatterBox accesses, what it stores, and what it does not do. The short version: ChatterBox measures sound levels on your computer and nothing leaves your device.
1. Microphone access
ChatterBox asks for permission to use your computer's microphone. It needs this to measure how loud the room is.
Sound is turned into a single volume number, many times per second, entirely on your computer.
ChatterBox does not record audio, save audio, convert speech to text, or try to identify who is speaking.
No audio, and no volume data, is ever sent to me or to anyone else.
The microphone is only used while the ChatterBox meter is turned on. Closing the meter stops microphone use. Chrome shows its own indicator whenever a page or extension is using the microphone.
2. Information stored on your device
ChatterBox saves your settings so they are there the next time you open it. This includes things like meter position and style, class names you create, calibration levels, and quiet streak results. These settings are kept in Chrome's built-in extension storage. If you are signed into Chrome with sync turned on, Chrome may sync these settings across your own devices through your Google account. I cannot see or access this information.
Please don't type student names into class names. Use labels like "Period 3" or "Art 8B" instead.
3. Information ChatterBox does not collect
ChatterBox does not collect, store, or share:
Names, email addresses, or account information (there is no account)
Audio recordings or transcripts
Your browsing history or the content of the pages you visit
Location data
Analytics, usage tracking, or advertising identifiers
ChatterBox has no ads, uses no cookies, and does not use any third party services.
4. Students and children
ChatterBox is designed to be installed and run by teachers on a teacher's computer. It does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13, so it is built to fit within the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). It does not access student education records as described in the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Schools should still follow their own policies for approving classroom tools.
5. Selling and sharing
I do not sell, rent, trade, or share any information, because ChatterBox does not collect any. This includes "selling" or "sharing" as those terms are used in the California Consumer Privacy Act.
6. Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
The use of information received by ChatterBox adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Microphone input is used only to display the noise meter and for no other purpose.
7. Deleting your information
You can delete everything ChatterBox has saved at any time by using the reset option in ChatterBox settings, or by removing the extension from Chrome. You can also turn off ChatterBox's microphone permission in Chrome's site and extension settings.
8. Changes to this policy
If ChatterBox changes in a way that affects your privacy, I will update this page and change the effective date at the top. If a future version ever needs to collect any information, this policy will say so clearly before that version is released.
