In this video, I go over the "flow" system of the Pioneer Press which shows our editing rundown, then I talk about the traditions such as a white elephant and fall media day.
The Coveted Spreadsheet System
Our issue spreadsheet is the keystone to the Press' organization. The spreadsheet system first started last year and continued into the 24-25 issues. Although it may seem mundane, everything in the spreadsheet is intentional and is key behind our operation. It allows us to track the "flow" system, the deadlines and ensure that everyone is organized. It is a collaborative spreadsheet that I run and start every issues, that editors can access and update.
Story Assignment Sheet + Editing Examples
Every issue, I edit around 15 stories, meaning so far this year I've edited around 50 or so stories. These stories are typically short blurbs, and I act as a copy editor, reinforcing AP style, and correcting minor errors.
Here is an example of what one of these papers would look like, and the notes that go on paper.
Our editing process is all paper, allowing for specific comments and multiple people to pass it around at once.
We use story assignment sheets to help us keep track of the paper.
(I like to think at least) I'm known to be someone who is easy to work with, as someone who is direct but also genuine and kind. In a letter of rec, political reporter from The Oregonian Sami Edge had written the photo to the left.
Staff Celebration!
Starting in 2023 the Pioneer Press has put on a white elephant and holiday celebration. This year I had the honor of organizing and hosting the holiday event. Bonding events like these really bring our staff together.
