Who is Calliope?

At Calliope Art & Literary Magazine, we publish compelling, quality art and writing that inspires us to pursue our own creative excellence. Calliope encourages new and experienced creators alike to engage with the publishing industry—and, more importantly, with each other. We are proud to keep all issues free to read and enjoy! We also host a number of open social engagements to foster connections and creativity within our community.

Our board members bridge their experiences across a wide variety of genres and mediums to thoughtfully review every single submission. Calliope works to honor the diverse voices and styles of our Chapman University community while maintaining high standards of integrity. All submissions are read anonymously during the evaluation process, meaning evaluators receive no identifying information about any creator until their piece has been accepted.

By working with creators to polish their pieces and providing feedback for improvement, we are able to showcase an eclectic range of groundbreaking work while encouraging artists to take risks and try new things. We welcome artists of all styles to share their work

Meet Our Board

Executive Board

Halle Ahn, Editor-in-chief

Halle is a Creative Writing and French double major who has worked with Calliope for three semesters so far, and couldn't be more excited or more proud to be a part of it moving forward. Extremely passionate about musicals, movies, TTRPG, books, matchas, and of course, writing. Halle cannot wait to see what the creative team and authors create this semester.

Sarah Hart (she/her), Managing Editor

Sarah is a senior double major in dance and English journalism, with a minor in peace & justice studies, and is stoked to be returning to the Calliope editorial board this year! In addition to Calliope, Sarah is on the executive board of the Chapman Undergraduate Law Review and a staff member at the Doti Struppa climbing wall. After this year, she hopes to continue her studies postgraduate and become a social worker.

Charlotte Moskowitz, Co-Editorial Assistant

Charlotte is a sophomore Writing for Film and TV and French double major with an Honors minor. They’re usually busy going to club meetings or writing scripts, and when they’re back home in Seattle, you can probably find them swimming in the lake or going to farmer’s markets.

Juliet Holmboe (she/her), Design Manager, Co-Editorial Assistant

Juliet is a junior Graphic Design major. Originally from Oklahoma, Juliet loves to travel. She was lucky enough to take a gap year during which she visited 9 countries. She also loves playing piano, film photography, and reading.

Nina Jensen (she/her), Publicity Manager

Nina Jensen says yay Art Board! She is a third year BFA Studio Art student with a double minor in Psychology and Production Design. While she loves experimenting and mixing media like photography, oil paint, and collage, her true roots are in Prismacolor balloon-animal realism. Outside of the visual arts, she likes the sound of a muted trumpet, redwoods, and yellow nectarines.

Editorial Board

Janet Abrantes Pereira (she/they)

Janet Abrantes Pereira is a junior English major from Orange County. She spends her time working at the library, crocheting, and opening new Google Docs instead of revisiting her works in progress. In the future, she would like to live somewhere with a lot of trees.

Lian Alba (he/him)

This is Lian’s second year in college, studying in creative writing. Over the past years, he has been working on his novel and other short stories. As one can expect, he enjoys literature, especially fantasy novels. In addition, he takes an interest in art, applying his passion for storytelling in a different medium.

Phineas Larson (he/him)

Phineas Larson is a senior Writing for Film and TV Major with an English Minor. He has written various screenplays of various lengths, as well as short stories, plays, and poetry. Two of his short stories have been published in previous Calliope editions. He is extremely passionate about storytelling of any kind and is extremely excited to be a part of Calliope's future.

Lily Moskowitz (they/them)

Lily is a sophomore majoring in Screenwriting and French. They love to write, read, cook, swim, watch cartoons, and explore California by train whenever they can.

Josh Olatunji

Josh Olatunji is a senior writing for film and television major from Massachusetts. When not writing, you can find him on campus rooting for his favorite Boston sports teams. Go Pats!

Brook Wellington

Brook Wellington is an undergraduate Writing for Film and TV major who spends months trying to make chains of pretty-sounding words—it’s quite hard!! During free time, Brook adores reading other people’s stories (as it can inspire and generate better chains of pretty-sounding words).

Art Board

Anisa Abdulkariem

Anisa Abdulkariem is a senior graphic designer with a passion for storytelling through design. Her work spans branding, digital media, and illustration, where she blends creativity with strategy to create meaningful and impactful visuals. Inspired by her background and personal experiences, Anisa strives to design with authenticity and purpose.

Lian Alba (he/him)

Matthew Marchese (he/him)

Matthew Marchese is a junior graphic design major and English minor. He is originally from Long Island, NY. Outside of art and writing, he enjoys hanging out with his friends, trying out new recipes, and frantically cleaning his apartment.

Shelly Netz (she/her)

Shelly Netz is a dedicated Graphic Design major from Seattle. She is a junior minoring in Advertising and Human-Computer Interaction. Outside of her academics, she loves to draw (especially with colored pencils), swim, scrapbook, and create unnecessarily elaborate gifts in the makerspace for her friends.

Cailyn Williams (she/her)

Cailyn Williams is a Graphic Design major and Sociology minor. She is someone who needs several cups of coffee a day and is a serious regular at Contra and Black Dot.
