Our nation once again took a turn politically with the election of President Trump. Obama’s handling of ISIS and global unrest motivated Trump’s candidacy. His slogan “Make America Great Again” aims to invoke a vision of restoring America to its past greatness. Trump's music selection was, for the most part, an accurate representation of the message which he was trying to convey.
In both his 2016 and 2020 campaign Trump used classics to represent a period in which he believed America was great. Out of all of the candidates in the 2020 election President Trump had the greatest amount of music from the 50’s to the 90’s. Song’s included included “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor, “Beat it” by Michael Jackson, and “Y.M.C.A” by Village People. The majority of President Trump's supporters are older and by playing music from this era Trump made his audience feel nostalgic and was able to connect with them emotionally, which is one of the key aspects of using campaign music.
