President Barack Obama campaign goals were to revive the economy, provide affordable and accessible healthcare for all, strengthen public education and social security, combat climate change through energy independence, and end the war in Iraq. His campaign was directed towards millennials. He encouraged them to vote and to participate in politics.
President Obama carefully curated his playlist to appeal to specific groups. His music ranged from different time periods and genres, however, one of his prime goals was to connect with the young. In the song “No Nostalgia” by AgesandAges the lyrics literally state, “Look how hip I am, young voters! I barely even know who the band is.” Similar to his campaign in 2008, when he reached historical numbers of young voters, in 2012 President Obama attempted to get millennials involved in politics and get them to vote, and campaign music was another way to connect with them.
In attempting to further connect with a younger crowd, Obama created a Spotify playlist of his campaign music. Overall, his campaign playlist was successful as it appealed to the young and conveyed a clear message of moving forward with songs like “Keep on Pushing” by the Impressions. According to a poll conducted in 2020, 52% out of 122 students at UNI chose the song “High Hopes” by Panic at the Disco because similar to the music selected by Obama, it appealed to the young and had a clear message, showing that Obama’s selections of campaign musics were overall affective.
