John D. Cope is a dedicated lifelong resident of New Kensington. John is a 1967 graduate of Ken High. He and his wife, Nancy have been married for 47 years. They have three sons; Chris, Nate, and Phillip Cope. Their three boys are proud graduates of the New Kensington-Arnold School District.
John D. Cope attended Edinboro State Teachers College, receiving a Bachelors degree in Secondary Social Studies. He started his career as a substitute teacher in surrounding school districts. After graduating from Edinboro, John continued his education by attending Gannon University, the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University, and Carnegie-Mellon University for post graduate credit.
John started his first full time teaching position at Lawrenceville Catholic High School. Six years later, he accepted a full time position as an 8th grade Social Studies teacher at Ridge Ave. Junior High School in the New Kensington School District. After being furloughed due to school construction, John taught several years at Serra Catholic High School until he accepted his current teaching position in 1991 at Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School. John is very active in his teaching career. He has served as the building representative with the Federation of Pittsburgh Diocese Teachers Union and as director of the Central Catholic Dioceses summer school program.
While dedicated to Central Catholic, John never cut his ties with the New Kensington community and its school district. He spent the summers teaching summer school in the New Kensington-Arnold School District. He also dedicated his time as the Jr. High School Boys Basketball Coach and continued for seven years as the Girls Varsity Basketball Coach; taking the girls to three consecutive section championships.
As an educator, John Cope believes that his 47 years of experience in education qualifies him to be a member of the New Kensington-Arnold School Board. His dedication to the school system will provide him with knowledge that can influence a positive change for families and students in the community. John promises to make education the number one priority if he is elected. With a willingness to be transparent and communicative with residents, teachers, and students - he believes that he can institute a positive and collaborative atmosphere with other board members and parents to accomplish CHANGES that would impact the students in our district. John Cope’s passion for education and his experience as an educator, leader, coach, and parent can be used to work for change that is needed in our school and community.
