Some people still struggle to differentiate between biodata, CV, and resume, thinking that these three documents are essentially the same. Chamara Perera explains that these documents are very different. They may hold similar functions but have fundamental differences in length, purpose, and layout.
Let's take a closer look at these all-important documents.
Biodata
When writing a biodata for a job, Chamara Perera says that you have to consider how to get the recruiter's interest.
Before applying, you have to read the job description thoroughly. After that, highlight your qualifications by discussing your education and experience, as well as work history. In your biodata, the recruiter will also seek information on your gender, race, religion, personal interests, and other personal qualities.
Resume
A resume is typically shorter than a biodata or a CV. Experts recommend that a resume should be limited to a single page because it is meant to stand out among the competition, and its intended readers do not usually dwell on the resume for too long.
If needed, the resume can be extended to two pages, but it should not be more than that. It includes a summarized version of the job applicant's education, skills, and experiences. Resumes also do not follow a rigid layout; they can be customized or tailor-fitted to the needs of the specific job position or company.
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
A CV, on the other hand, does not need to have its length constrained, as it is intended to be a full record of an individual's academic and career history. Chamara Perera says that it can be more than two pages long, containing a detailed overview of one's educational achievements, work experience, as well as awards received.
The items listed in a CV are typically organized in chronological order, making the document static unless new entries are written in.
