We study plant diversity, biological invasions, and ecological restoration in the era of climate change. We investigate community assembly and plant–soil interactions to inform biodiversity conservation and the restoration of ecosystem functions and services.
We investigate how species composition, diversity, functional traits, and arrival order shape plant communities and their resistance to invasion. We examine the mechanisms of biotic resistance, through which native plant communities suppress invasion, and how their effects vary with environmental conditions and spatial scale.
Research highlights: We showed that restoring functionally diverse plant communities enhances invasion resistance, while native seed density and invasive species arrival order independently affect biotic resistance.
Restoring functionally diverse wetland communities — Byun et al. (2020), Journal of Ecology · IF 6.3 · JCR top 9.8%.
Independent effects of seed density and arrival order — Lee et al. (2025), Journal of Applied Ecology · IF 5.3 · JCR top 9.1%.
We connect invasive alien plant control with native vegetation recovery to reduce reinvasion and sustain restoration outcomes. We evaluate field applications of Seed Flat, an advanced seed-based restoration technology. We also pursue research on endangered species restoration, linking site selection, propagation, and reintroduction to habitat requirements.
Research highlights: We developed restoration approaches combining selective removal with native seed mixtures and investigated high-pressure water spraying as a non-chemical control method.

We use nationwide vegetation data, habitat information, and functional traits to analyze plant diversity patterns, hotspots, and their environmental drivers. We evaluate priority areas and plant taxa for conservation based on species and functional diversity, providing ecological evidence for in situ and ex situ conservation.
Research highlights: Our nationwide vegetation analyses identified a negative association of native plant richness with alien cover rather than alien richness, and mapped plant diversity hotspots and environmental correlates to inform conservation prioritization.

Plant diversity patterns, hotspots, and environmental correlates in Korea — Byun et al., Biological Conservation · Under major revision · IF 5.1 · JCR top 13.0%.
We study how invasive alien and native plants respond to elevated CO₂ and drought. We aim to link plant growth and resource allocation with root-mediated allelopathy and interactions involving arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) to explain how climate change alters plant competition and biotic resistance. This research will inform climate-adaptive conservation and restoration.
Research highlights: We compared invasive and native plant responses to drought and elevated CO₂ through meta-analysis and demonstrated changes in carbon-related processes under elevated CO₂ and nitrogen in wetland experiments.
Invasive and native plant responses to drought and elevated CO₂ — Sobuj et al. (2024), NeoBiota · IF 3.2 · JCR top 26.0%.

We combine greenhouse and field experiments, field monitoring, and nationwide vegetation data analysis with statistical methods and species distribution modeling. These approaches connect community-level mechanisms with broad-scale patterns and help evaluate the field applicability and persistence of conservation and restoration outcomes.

향후 연구 방향
Future Research Directions
Scale Dependency and Staged-Scale Restoration. Restoration outcomes can vary with experimental scale and field conditions. We aim to link experiments across spatial scales with long-term monitoring to evaluate restoration strategies that strengthen resistance to invasion and promote native plant recovery.
Climate Change Research. Using CO₂ × drought experiments in open-top chambers (OTCs), we resolve how competition between invasive ragweeds (Ambrosia) and their native relatives (Artemisia) is reshaped and trace the belowground pathways—resource allocation, allelopathy, and AMF—with ¹³C/¹⁵N/³³P isotopes. Coupling these mechanisms with species distribution models (SDMs), we project future invasion risk across East Asia under climate change SSP scenarios.
Endangered Species Restoration. We pair the global functional-trait database (TRY) with field data to diagnose the functional niche and restoration requirements of endemic and endangered plants quantitatively. As a starting point, we derived host-plant, micro-habitat, and propagation requirements for the Korean endemic, Class II endangered Pedicularis ishidoyana—a root hemiparasite—and are extending the approach to other species.
Translational Ecology. We draw on nationwide natural-environment survey big data to link Korean plant diversity with the distribution of invasive and endangered species, and translate community-assembly principles into the field through a patent-pending Seed Flat technology and volunteer-led restoration. The aim is a translational ecology that unites theoretical rigor with practical environmental problem-solving.
