"Citation rat" is a metaphor for an uncertain interdisciplinary existence rooted in scientometrics. The citation rat scurries around (and below) conventional scientific edifices looking for research metadata feeding off the scraps of normal science, which are occasionally delicious. This rodent tries to develop new ideas that are unburdened by insularity and dogma. Dissemination of these ideas usually results in adverse peer-review outcomes and expressions of disapproval from the 'in group'.
