High-Speed Planetary Gear Vibration

Planetary gears used in aerospace and industrial machinery applications can rotate at several thousand revolutions per minute. At these high-speeds gyroscopic effects, which arise due to the carrier's rotation, can be important. This project investigated the structured modal properties, stability, eigenvalue behavior, and single-mode vibration of high-speed planetary gears.

Efficient Finite Element/Contact Mechanics Formulation for Gear Vibrations

This work developed an efficient solution method for the vibration of gears. The figure below shows example results for a helical gear pair. The markers are from the full, time domain, finite element solution. The lines are the approximate frequency domain solution. The two solutions agree for a wide range of applied torques. The computational savings using the frequency domain solution are substantial.
