The weekend began with the annual Convention Awards Dinner at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, where AFT Massachusetts celebrated leadership, service, and solidarity. The evening included $18,000 in scholarships awarded to nine students connected to AFT members and recognition of eight members with the 2026 Distinguished Service Award for their dedication to their local unions and communities.
The event also honored the 50th anniversaries of the Chelmsford Federation of Teachers and Medway Federation of Teachers. The reception featured a performance of “Rise Up” by Berklee Faculty Union leaders Nichelle J. Mungo and Utar Artun, reflecting this year’s convention theme.
On Saturday, delegates from more than two dozen locals gathered at IBEW Local 103 for the 2026 AFT Massachusetts Convention, where leaders highlighted strong union growth, successful contract campaigns, and organizing victories across the state despite ongoing challenges facing public education and labor. Since the 2025 Convention, more than 25 locals secured new contracts improving pay, benefits, and workplace protections for members.
Delegates unanimously re-elected Jessica Tang as President and Brant Duncan as Secretary-Treasurer for the 2026–2028 term. The convention also included updates from organizers, recognition of retiring leaders and legislative allies, and the passage of four resolutions focused on public education, PSRPs, immigrant families, and May Day civic action.
The convention featured performances from student groups across Massachusetts and concluded with a celebration of the union’s continued strength, solidarity, and commitment to protecting public education and working families.

UNPAID LEAVE & SENIORITY
Reminder: Use of unpaid time off during the academic year will affect your seniority date.
Your seniority date will be adjusted according to language set forth in your collective bargaining agreement. (Article 1-06, c., for Teachers/Nurses; Article 15-01 for Professional Support Staff).
Your date of initial appointment (seniority date) is adjusted by the number of unpaid leave days you incur.
A Note About INTERVIEW COMMITTEES
The Union's stance is against having members be on the interview committee for other union jobs as it often pits member against member (especially with transfers and when you may know the applicant). We strongly advise against a union member participating on the interview committee for other jobs supported by the union. You have every right to make this personal decision but we prefer that you stand in solidarity with each other!
We do believe you should be asked to be on interview committees for administrative positions in order to have your voice be heard.
Thank you to this month's member in the spotlight: OUR WONDERFUL NURSING STAFF!
Do you know a Union member who has done something noteworthy?
Let us know and nominate a member! Acts of kindness, going above and beyond duties, and exemplifying what teaching is all about are all reasons to nominate someone. Tell us about this member's contributions!
