Blue Stockings

by Jessica Swale, presented by CFCC Studio Theater

April 20-22, 27-29

Studio Theater, CFCC Wilson Center

"Love or knowledge: which would you choose?"

1896. Girton College, Cambridge, the first college in Britain to admit women. The Girton girls study ferociously and match their male peers grade for grade. Yet, when the men graduate, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being a "blue stocking"--an unnatural, educated woman, They are denied degrees and go home unqualified and unmarriageable.

In Jessica Swale's debut play, Blue Stockings, Tess Moffat and her fellow first years are determined to win the right to graduate. But little do they anticipate the hurdles in their way: the distraction of love the cruelty of the class divide or the strength of the opposition, who will do anything to stop them. The play follows them over one tumultuous academic year, in their fight to change the future of education.

Kimberly Bellflower's John Proctor Is the Villain dives into the heavy topics of dating violence, pedophilia, and grooming in the post me-too era.

At a rural high school in Georgia, a group of lively teens are studying “The Crucible” while navigating young love, sex ed, and a few school scandals. Holding a contemporary lens to the American classic, they begin to question who is really the hero and what is the truth, discovering their own power in the process. Alternately touching and bitingly funny, this new comedy captures a generation in mid-transformation, running on pop music, optimism, and fury, writing their own coming of age story.

TRIGGER WARNING: Dating violence, grooming, adult language and adult situations are contained in this play.
