Arguably, Cesar's greatest accomplishment was his foundation of the National Farm Workers Association with Dolores Huerta. With the creation of this organization, he planned and exacted the California grape pickers strike. Along with the strike, he also organized a national boycott of California grapes.
After Chavez's initial success with the NFWA, he merged the NSWA with another labor organization to create the United Farm Workers. Within this group, Chavez fought to make the struggles of farm workers known to all. Eventually, due to the efforts of him and many others, the agricultural labor relations act of 1974 was passed. This act gave farm workers the right to unionize and the ability to negotiate for better wages and working conditions.
Presidential Medal of Freedom
In recognition of Chavez's work throughout the communities of both laborers and Hispanics, President Clinton awarded him the presidential medal of honor, the highest honor a citizen can receive. Unfortunately, due to his untimely passing, this award was received by his wife, Helen.
