IZAK9 Cubes

Izak9 Cubes provide a shared learning environment rich in problem solving and reasoning, where pupils can develop team work and problem solving skills. Children work together in small groups to solve problems using the 9 cubes. Each cube has six different faces which provides a wide variety of challenges and problems for the children to discuss and solve.

Lesson Plan 1

Title: Colourbox explained

Purpose: The idea is for pupils to use appropriate mathematical language to identify numbers and shapes by their properties and use terms like clockwise/anticlockwise, major/minor diagonal, top/bottom, left/right etc. to identify location accurately.

Activity: Pupils are given certain criteria to identify which cubes to include in a 2 by 2 array and the orientation in which they are presented. The one thing these cubes have in common, is that they are of the same interior colour.

Lesson Plan 2

Title: Bearings explained

Purpose: To familiarise pupils with the points of the compass before moving on to the more complex problem-solving tasks (Bearings 2 and Bearings 3)

Task activity: This fairly simple task involves pupils building an array made up of the single digits one to nine, in numerical order.

The computer then selects questions at random asking the pupils to identify a number from location instructions using the points of the compass.

For example: Which number is South of three and East of five?
