Categoría Profesional: Doctor Investigador/a Principal: Mª Ángeles Gómez De La Torre Dedicación: 40 horas/semanales. Duración: 12 meses. Trabajo a realizar: Se caracterizarán distintas formulaciones de cementos belíticos y cementos con arcillas calcinadas y con piedra caliza (LC3) para obtener morteros sostenibles y con prestaciones mecánicas y de durabilidad competitivas. Se realizarán, entre otros, ensayos de resistencia a la carbonatación, al ataque por sulfatos y la permeabilidad de cloruros. Además, se estudiará el desarrollo microstructural de pastas y morteros mediante medidas de ondas de ultrasonido y microtomografía computarizado de rayos-X de laboratorio.

Predoctoral Opportunity in the Faculty of Science, University of Málaga

“Eco-cements with mechanochemically activated Spanish clays” 

We are looking for a strongly-motivated open-mind PhD candidate, through an predoctoral contract (old PFI), in the frame of the project: “Optimization and Processing of LC3 Eco-cements with Spanish Clays (ProLC3@Spain), PID2020-114650RB-I00 (National call).

- Master Thesis Degree in materials, mineralogy or related discipline.

- To be registered or accepted as doctorate candidate in an official program for 2021/2022 when he/she submit the application of this offer, or before signing the contract.

Responsabilities of succesful candidate:

- To study/optimize the mechanochemical activation of Spanish clays with different amounts of kaolinite (from~40 to ~70-80 wt% contents).

- To study the replacement of calcined clays in LC3 by mechanochemically activated clays, and compare with the reference materials.

- To study/optimize the use of selected admixtures (accelerators). It will allow the preparation of binders with improved/tailored mechanical properties and durability performances.

- Use of analytical techniques commonly used in cement science characterization, such as preparation of pastes/mortars, rheology, ultrasonic wave velocity measurements, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance, microscopy, mechanical strength, and durability (carbonation resistance, chloride migration resistance and sulfate resistance).

● The research group ‘cement science at University of Malaga’ (https://sites.google.com/view/cementscience-uma) has opened a postdoc position (initially) for 24 months with the research summary/tasks:

'Synchrotron and laboratory X-ray tomographic imaging of building materials'

“The successful candidate will join our efforts to decrease the CO2 footprint of cementitious materials by researching the microstructures of advanced binders with lower embodied carbon contents. Specifically, the main binders to be quantitatively analyzed by X-ray imaging are belite-based binders and limestone calcined clay cements. Both synchrotron and laboratory X-ray 3D data are available in a number of contrast and spatial resolutions including absorption-based, phase-contrast based and ptychographic nanotomography. A call of tender for a state-of-the-art laboratory X-ray computer microtomography equipment is currently ongoing and the candidate will profit from its performances.”

The expected starting date, after all administrative procedures, will be likely March-2021 (with some degree of uncertainty due to the recruitment in the COVID-19 situation). Requirements:

•  A PhD in building materials, materials science or related discipline (at the time of signing the contract).

• Proven experience, with scientific publications, in X-ray tomographic imaging or in cementitious materials.

•  High motivation to work in cementitious materials with low CO2 footprints by using X-ray imaging techniques.

• Good English knowledge and good computing skills. Spanish knowledge is an asset but not needed.
