Visual Acuity Testing: They conduct basic vision tests, such as measuring visual acuity (using the Snellen chart) and checking for color blindness.
Diagnostic Testing: Ophthalmic assistants may perform or assist in various diagnostic tests, such as tonometry (measuring intraocular pressure), visual field testing, and refraction tests to determine the patient's prescription for eyeglasses.
Patient Education: They educate patients on eye care, contact lens wear, and post-operative care instructions, ensuring that patients understand their treatment plans.
Equipment Maintenance: Ophthalmic assistants are responsible for maintaining and cleaning ophthalmic instruments and equipment to ensure they function correctly.
Sterilization: They follow strict hygiene and sterilization protocols to maintain a clean and safe environment in the clinic or operating room.
Assisting with Procedures: Ophthalmic assistants may assist during eye surgeries and procedures by providing instruments and ensuring aseptic conditions are maintained.
Administrative Tasks: They may also handle administrative duties, such as scheduling appointments, verifying insurance information, and managing patient files.
Team Collaboration: Ophthalmic assistants work closely with ophthalmologists, optometrists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
Patient Comfort: They are responsible for ensuring that patients are comfortable and at ease during examinations and procedures, addressing any concerns or questions they may have.
