Pigs

We raise pigs of varying breeds but do generally try to stick with those that are considered heritage over those that are for production. We find that these animals are better acclimated to our climate conditions, more disease resistant, and utilize feed more efficiently. We feel that they also tend to have denser, less fatty meat.

In spring, summer, and fall our pigs are raised on pasture in a rotational manner. They are moved to a new section of land about every week. In addition to pasture forage they are provided with grain rations and plenty of fresh water. The rotational system that we use with pastured pigs has two purposes. It gives the pigs clean untouched areas to live on and also helps preserve the land. Pigs can significantly damage land with their behaviors of consistently digging and rooting around to find food and moist soil. You would be amazed how powerful they are. They are funny creatures and often act like dogs: playing games of chase and carrying around sticks or other objects that they dig up.

We are experimenting with raising over wintered pigs for the first time this year. These guys are currently living in one of our stalls and the plan is to move them outside to a paddock after the worst of the weather has passed. In lieu of grasses that they would get during other months we are providing them with hay and other forage as well grain and water. So far so good...though we do prefer them to be outside!

We offer USDA inspected pork for sale by the pound. This can be purchased by the individual cut, half, or whole (half or whole must be prearranged but we have individual cuts available all of the time). This product line is available for on farm pickup, prearranged delivery, or in the case of by the cut at any of the farmers markets that we attend. Please follow our social media pages for market announcements for the 2022 season.
