Vegetable Garden

The 2022 vegetable garden design inspiration comes from stories. We looked to folklore, folk tales, fairy tales, and children’s books that involve vegetables to guide us in developing plans for the individual garden beds. These stories come from various cultures around the world.

Signs depicting an image from the story will be displayed in the beds they inspired.

Story signs will rotate along with the vegetables, according to season. Using a QR code on the story signs visitors will be able to use their phones to link to a synopsis of the story along with additional information about the featured vegetable. These links are also available from this webpage.

In the spring you will see garden beds based on the following stories in the garden

Peter Rabbit (England)

Princess and the Pea (Denmark)

The Pea Emperor (Romania)

The Giant Cabbage (Russia)

The Peter Rabbit bed will rotate its vegetables according to the season. Pea stories may return again in the fall.

In summer, the spring stories will be replaced by

Anansi and the Talking Melon (Africa)

Lily’s Garden of India (India)

The Clump of Basil (Puerto Rico)

The Goat in the Chili Patch (Mexico)

The Schoolmaster’s Autumn Festival (China)

Three Sisters Legend (Native American)
