WHAT is the SACRAMENT of CONFIRMATION? Confirmation is a Sacrament in the Catholic Church in which the one who is confirmed (confirmandi) receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hand and anointing with chrism by the bishop. It is a sacrament of initiation which means that it brings you deeper into communion with the Church. Confirmation is the completion of he Sacrament of Baptism.
WHO CAN BE CONFIRMED? Any person desiring to be Confirmed, must first be validly baptized. In the Diocese of Lansing, children must be in 8th grade or older.
WHAT are the REQUIREMENTS to RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT of CONFIRMATION? The student must attend our monthly Confirmation Class. We meet on the 3rd Sunday of each month in the Community Room in the basement of the Parish Center. An adult MUST attend class with the student. This can be mom, dad, grandparents, sponsor, etc. If the student is not already enrolled in Catholic School, they must also register and attend our monthly Family Religious Education Program. Please see below for information regarding sponsors, Confirmation names, service opportunities and our Confirmation Day of reflection.

The Confirmation Day of Reflection will be held in the parish hall. This event is free for all SJV and FREP students. It will include lunch and Mass.
A day of reflection is a requirement of the Diocese of Lansing for all students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. If you child is unable to attend our day, please let your teacher know as soon as possible so an alternative can be found.

The Confirmandi will be asked to choose a Confirmation Name. The Catholic Church asks that you first look at the baptismal name of the child, then a saint name and, finally, the name of another good Catholic (grandma, uncle, etc.). This needs to be somebody that your child can look up to as an example of a good, Catholic way of life. This should be the child’s choice with the help of parents, sponsor, etc.
The students are asked to do three service projects during the year. These service projects can be done in a variety of ways. A service project is anything that the student does that they do not get paid for and that helps out somebody. However, I do ask that you try to think outside the box a little. For example, if it is your child’s job to babysit his or her younger siblings while mom and dad go bowling every Wednesday night, perhaps don’t make that a service project. Try something new. There are a few service projects listed on the Confirmation Information sheet. Your child is not required to do these particular projects, but I do try to help them find things to do. More service projects will be announced as they are made available to me.
A sponsor is one that will aid the child and parents in the faith journey of the Confirmandi for life. To pick a sponsor, the Catholic Church asks that you first look at Godparents, if they fill the requirements below. I ask that the child and parents work together to choose the sponsor(s). I do not ask very much of the sponsors because I trust that you will choose a person who is active in the life of the student.
a. Sponsors need to be fully initiated Catholics (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation have all been received.)
b. They need to be active in their faith life (attend Mass regularly).
c. They need to be at least 16 years of age.
d. They need to be somebody that is active in the life of the Confirmandi.
e. Parents CAN NOT be sponsors, but can be proxies if the need arises.
You can have up to two sponsors if you would like
