The Jazz Ensemble is a great opportunity for students on a variety of instruments to learn how to play jazz and contemporary music in a band. Students learn how to improvise, build their performance skills, acquire a thorough understanding of jazz harmony and theory, and perform jazz and contemporary repertoire. Students have the opportunity to perform for the Conservatorium at concerts and public performances throughout the year.

Transcribing Jazz Workshop

Open to: Participants & ObserversAges: 12 - AdultAbility Level: participants will need to be playing/performing at an intermediate to advanced levelTeacher: Brendan BerlachTime: 4:00 - 7:00pmLocation: Demountable 1, Conservatorium 45 Mann Street GosfordEquipment required for Participants: Registration essential and prepare the written melody in advanceAbout: This class will study 2 excerpts of improvisation by jazz greats, over standard jazz repertoire. The selections being Miles Davis on "So What" and Paul Desmond on "Autumn Leaves". Instrument/Voice participation is essential, with participants guided into active listening of the excerpts. They will translate the phrases they hear, both onto their instrument and down onto paper, which will lead into discussions about rhythmic structure and notation, the language of the jazz idiom, memorisation versus notation, and how to understand the logic of the performer and apply it in the participant's own creativity. The participants will then attempt to incorporate ideas from the transcribing process into their own improvising "jam session".

Workshop will include explanation of the fundamental muscle groups that are linked to the respiratory system and anxiety. Exercises to manage performance stress and a movement sequence to prepare the body for optimal performance.

Genres covered include rock, pop music, blues and other contemporary styles of music. Students learn to interpret a lead sheet (melody line and chord changes), learn to improvise and experience performing as a group. The age range of students is from teenagers to students in their early twenties. At least 4 years instrumental experience is required.

If so, this is the workshop for you! Work on your internal sense of rhythm. This workshop is designed to make you understand the relationship of music and math. Group rhythm counting where everyone is playing different rhythm/numbers groupings which all eventually cone back together on beat 1 after so many revolutions. Discover your inner percussionist with expert percussion teacher Sean Steele.
