Unit overview, curriculum links, guiding questions, learning goals, success criteria, and instructional considerations.
This unit focuses on art as activism. Students will be introduced to the topic by learning that activism is much more than what is often thought of as protests and campaigns. This lesson will give students a brief overview of the history of protest art and the forms it can take. Students will be introduced to the terms "activist" and "activism" and asked to think how activists demonstrate traits of effective community leaders. Students will be urged to think about how works of art can show support for a local issue. Finally, students will be asked to compose a piece of artwork that illustrates an individual in their life demonstrating an effective leadership trait. This lesson is meant to be a general introduction to how the arts can promote awareness and activism in areas of social injustice.
This project focuses on combining visual art and prayer as a way to bring awareness to how students are feeling about what they have been learning. Students will be introduced to praying through colour technique and will understand how, as young artists, they can use their skills and techniques to create a conversation with God and to raise awareness about a social, political or civic issue learned about in one of the other units. Students will see that prayer and awareness can take on many different forms. This lesson will prepare students to share their art and prayer with their fellow students and the school community to raise awareness.
This unit continues to focus on art for awareness. Students will be introduced to the idea of combining scripture, prayer, music, and dance. Using dance as a form of prayer, students will be able to share their feelings about the social justice issue of their choice with others in the class and perhaps the wider school community. Students will see how artists use music and choreography to create a picture, draw in the audience, and make a commentary on social, political or civic issues while connecting to their faith. Once again students will see that awareness can take on many different forms. This lesson will give students a brief overview of the history of praise and worship dance and its characteristics. Finally, students will be asked to connect their values to their beliefs as Catholics on a social justice issue that is important to them.
