In this lesson, students will be introduced to the idea and definition of social justice. They will begin the lesson by reflecting on children's ideas of "fairness." They will come to understand that there is a connection between fairness and social justice. Students will be introduced to the close reading strategy and employ it to examine a text regarding the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Finally, students will reflect on the reading and video, in conjunction with scripture, to determine what God's message is about social justice for all.
In this lesson, students will be introduced to some of the many types of social justice injustices that plague our world. They will begin the lesson by watching a video about the sustainable development goals of the United Nations (SDGs) that help students identify different ways injustice occurs. They will come to understand that social injustice is associated with a plethora of causes and that God calls upon us to protect and fight for the rights of all our brothers and sisters. Students will focus on making connections to self, world, and texts in relation to social justice issues. Finally, students will look at scripture and Catholic Social Teaching to understand God's path for them.
In this lesson, students will be introduced to the idea of perspective taking. They will begin the lesson by taking an opinion and sharing it respectfully with others. Finally, students will reflect on the importance of community as found outlined in scripture. Students will reflect upon how living in community can help alleviate social injustice and strengthen our resolve to live out the faith we proclaim.
This lesson will focus on developing understanding of the United Nations organization, fundamental human rights and their relation to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students will be introduced to and asked to connect the Catholic social teaching of Life and Dignity of the Human Person to human rights and the SDGs. Students will review text features as they explore informational texts about ways they can make a difference. They will also begin to develop attitudes toward adopting a more sustainable lifestyle that respects all humanity and the earth that supports us all.
