As we turn the page to a new academic year, we celebrate the milestones that mark fresh starts and bold steps forward. Congratulations to the Class of 2025—our newest graduates—on reaching the culmination of your doctoral journey. Your perseverance, scholarship, and dedication to the values of social work have prepared you to lead in a world that deeply needs your voice. To the Class of 2026, we applaud your achievement in advancing to doctoral candidacy—a pivotal step that opens the door to the rich, rigorous work ahead. Finally, a warm welcome to the incoming Class of 2027, whose journey is just beginning. May your time here be filled with transformative learning and lifelong connections. Each of you, in your own stage, reminds us that every ending is also a beginning, and every beginning carries both excitement and challenge.
To our alumni, this season is also a perfect invitation to reflect and reimagine. Consider ways to reconnect with your alma mater, mentor the next generation, or revisit your own professional goals with fresh eyes. New challenges often bring the best out of us—they stretch our thinking, sharpen our skills, and expand our capacity to serve. As Isaiah 43:19 reminds us, “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” God’s work in us is never static; He continually calls us to step into new opportunities with faith, courage, and expectancy. Whether your next chapter involves leading change in your community, advancing scholarship, or embracing an unexpected door opening before you, may you press forward into all that He has prepared for you.

Spring is winding down and we're ready for summer. If you are a current DSW student, however, this semester is already starting to feel hot with intensity. Each year in our program the summer semester is busy with culminating projects, defenses, Residencies, and reflecting on next steps. It's exciting and terrifying all at the same time.
Let me take this brief moment to offer a word of encouragement. You've got this! You are right where God needs you to be, and although this semester will come with challenges and more stress, you are not in this alone. During the times when we feel like we don't have what it takes, God steps in and carries us. He also puts others in our path to encourage us and hold our hand. God is with you, and your CBU community is by your side.
Now is not the time to grow weary in your well-doing. It is not the time to give up (Galations 6:9).

Congratulations to James Armor (c/o '26) who spoke on a mental health panel at the Health Professions Conference hosted by Reach Out which was held at Cal State San Bernardino.
Dear Social Work students,
I pray you are all well. Over the past few days, individuals have expressed thoughts, feelings, as well as concerns related to the recent shifts associated with the change in leadership and the new administration of our country. There has been a spectrum of public reactions to recent events related to national spending, immigration policy, as well as global initiatives. As a nation, we have experienced the full spectrum of reactions from support to opposition, optimism and even fear for the future. Some of you, or your families may have personally been impacted by recent policy shifts as well. In the midst of so much change, it is normal and expected for individuals to seek clarity and direction of what to make of changes that have evoked so many strong feelings. In these challenging times it is more important than ever to lean into our faith. I am reminded of Mother Teresa’s quote, “If there is no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”
I would like to take a moment to share a few thoughts with you and offer several resources as you continue your social work studies with us. Some of you may be asking, “What is the position of the Division of Social Work in the midst of so much change?” The Division of Social Work delivers curriculum that is aligned with the Code of Ethics and standards of the National Association of Social Workers and our accrediting body, The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Our faculty remain committed to equipping students to enter the field of social work advocating for individuals and communities in a manner aligned with the ethics and standards of our occupation. I have included the links to these standards below for your reference:
NASW: https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English
Additionally, each of these organizations have released statements following the recent election stating their position. You can review those below:
CSWE: https://www.cswe.org/news/newsroom/cswe-statement-on-the-national-election/
In addition to delivering social work curriculum that is in alignment with the Code of Ethics and standards noted, at CBU, we offer an educational experience that makes us distinct from other institutions, as our curriculum is also Christ-centered. As faculty our deepest desire for you as a student is twofold, 1) To prepare you to become competent and effective social workers AND 2) To serve your profession, clients and communities in a manner that glorifies God. Integrating the Christian worldview into your studies prepares you to think more deeply, serve more broadly, and advocate more impactfully for the marginalized in our communities.
If you are feeling anxious, uncertain, or are simply seeking guidance on how to navigate current social discussions, know that our division is unwavering in our belief that scripture points to our true north, guiding and informing our steps on how to navigate these events.
I would invite you to lean into your conversations with your instructors and peers and take advantage of the following resources during your time with CBU:
1. Classroom discussions: Though each course you take focuses on a specific area of social work, all content is faith integrated and Christ-centered. I invite you to lean into the conversations held in class and bring your questions with you. Each course prepares you to sharpen your skills to engage individuals and communities in a Christ-centered manner.
2. Student groups: We offer Bible Study, Love thy Neighborhood (LTN), the Social Work Association of Multilingual and Multicultural Social Work (SWAMMP), and the Asian American Pacific Islander Social Work Caucus as touch points for students to engage in discourse, listen to, and learn from one another.
3. Office hours and mentorship: We have nearly 30 fulltime social work faculty who are fully competent and established practitioner scholars; all with a heart for Christ and a love for students. Please reach out to your faculty and mentors to gain their perspectives on current events and the lessons scripture teaches us on these topics.
Finally, what we need at this time, is to extend to one another the grace that Christ has extended to us. It is easier to cancel someone than to attempt to really listen. Christ presented us with the ultimate model of social work, and that was to run to the margins for the sake of honoring the God given dignity of every human being. Christ’s ministry was ultimately a journey towards Shalom. His journey was restorative in nature, not retributive. The Hebrew concept for this process is referred to as Tikun Olam, or “repairing the world”. We hold the truth in our hearts that God is forever present, even in the darkest of moments. We trust in His vision that will come to fruition and that “all things will be made new”. He is asking us to remain faithful and to engage in Tikun Olam to actively participate in the repairing of harm that exists in the world.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stated: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Let us continue to strive to become light and love to all we meet. I am grateful that God has placed you in this program, during this time. His vision is anointed, and it includes you. Please remember, “We belong to one another.”
I am keeping you in prayer daily,
Dr. Mejico
