Thanksgiving: A day of mourning

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving week is just around the corner and the semester is winding down to a close. As we prepare for this U.S. holiday I want to leave you with a few reflections. First, the images most of us have grown up with of “pilgrims and Indians” sitting around a rustic dinner table having a meal is a myth. For many Indigenous people Thanksgiving is a time of mourning as it commemorates the colonization of North America which led to genocide and centuries of oppression. As social workers (and Christians) we should be committed to mourning with those who mourn (Rom. 12:15) and entering into a time of lament with our Indigenous brothers and sisters. Second, I want to encourage you to find some ways to “decolonize” your Thanksgiving traditions year. There are lots of resources online that provide suggestions such as educating your family, celebrating Native people, and adding Native foods to your meal. Last, as social workers we value the importance of human relationships because we know they are essential to individual and collective flourishing. This Thanksgiving, let us be intentional about focusing on relationships first. Whether you plan to spend time with biological relatives or will be sitting around a “Friendsgiving” table, focus on cultivating relationships with others and practicing gratitude. This is one way we can observe this complex holiday while honoring the beautiful collectivistic nature of Native culture. Know that I am grateful for each of you and pray you have a blessed and restful holiday to recharge you for the remainder of the semester.

¡Si Se Puede!

In 1972, the United Farm Workers, led by Cesar Chavez, Delores Huerta, and others were in a battle for their lives. They were fighting for the livelihood, safety, and security of farm workers, mostly Latino and Indigenous. Chavez was also trying to survive a water-only fast to protest unjust practices and legislation. They were advised to give up because the battle was too hard and their enemy too big. They were told “No, no se puede!” (“No, no it can’t be done”). Then Dolores responded, “Si, si se puede!” (“Yes, yes, it can be done”). This has been a rallying cry for the fight for justice and equity. As we celebrate both Hispanic Heritage Month and Indigenous People’s Day let us not forget the sacrifices of those who come before us. Whatever social problem you are focused on addressing, let us not forget that we can each make a difference. Yes, it can be done!. After his fast ended Chavez made a statement, “The greatest tragedy is not to live and die, as we all must. The greatest tragedy is for a person to live and die without knowing the satisfaction of giving life for others.” This month as you continue to busy yourself with assignments, reading, and tasks remember these words from Ceasar Chavez. Let us continue to press forward to the mark of the high calling that God has given each of us. The sacrifice that you each make during your doctoral studies is one way of giving your life for others. Keep pressing and ¡SI SE PUEDE!

Walking on Water

Welcome to the Fall 2022 semester in the Doctor of Social Work program! We are excited to welcome 32 new DSW students to our Lancer family. Another 28 of you are now transitioning into your second-year coursework. Most of you are first-generation college students and the first in your family to obtain a doctoral degree. As you all embark on this journey you are entering uncharted territory. It will seem unfamiliar and a bit overwhelming at times. Much like Peter of the Bible, it may feel like you are being asked to walk on water; an impossible task. However, Jesus is asking you to trust Him and “take courage. Don’t be afraid” (Matthew 14:27).

As you dive into your fall coursework remember that your faculty and peers are here to support you and cheer you on. More importantly, we believe that God has called each of you into this program so that you may live out your purpose and innovate solutions to our world’s most pressing social problems. Although it won’t be easy, it will be worth it! Stay connected to your support systems and keep your eyes above the waves.

Keep Pressing Forward!

Are you feeling the burn yet? The summer semester in the DSW program is among the most challenging because you are working to complete major projects. Whether you are completing your Qualifying Exam or your Comprehensive Project the work seems never ending and the pressure is mounting. Take a moment to pause, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that you are skilled, intelligent, and more than capable of completing the work. Now just keep pressing forward! The Bible highlights perseverance and endurance as desirable qualities we should all have. The Apostle Paul shared with the church at Philippi that he is “forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14). This semester your prize is either Doctoral Candidacy or completion of your doctoral degree. However, there is more to it than that. Your success this semester will forever serve as a testament to your ability to persevere and endure. You are building muscles that will serve you well in your career, and in your life, for years to come. Keep pressing forward and remember that you have a team of supporters to help you.

A Season of Transition

Congratulations on completing another semester in the Doctor of Social Work program! I know the Spring semester came with its share of challenges and triumphs but you persevered. Well done!

For first-year students, this summer semester marks your official transition into Phase 2 of the DSW program. The summer is focused on helping you function as an independent scholar-practitioner. You’ll notice that the summer semester feels “different”. You will be spending a lot more time on your own project and a lot less time with your classmates in formal classroom activities. Although you will continue to have the support you need from faculty, staff, and colleagues you have the opportunity to spread your wings and impress the world with how knowledgeable and skilled you are.

For second-year students, this summer semester marks the end of the road in your academic journey. This is your last and final semester in the program! However, this semester might also be the toughest yet. You are finalizing your projects and writing more than you ever thought you could write. You will be pushed hard this semester and challenged. The bar will be very high because we know you can rise to the occasion and demonstrate yourself to be a scholar-practitioner, expert, and leader. Our field needs you and I’m thankful God is equipping you for this moment.

For all of you, I’ll continue to pray for your health and ability to manage everything without becoming anxious. Remember that the Bible tells us to “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

He is Risen!

This month Christians celebrate the holiest day of the year, Easter. This holiday, which some call Resurrection Day, is the day when followers of Jesus remember the sacrifice and the miracle of His death and resurrection. This is the event that defines the Christian faith; the fact that Jesus was both fully God and fully human and that he died a physical death yet rose to life again. His death was the ultimate atonement for the sins of all humanity and was the final act of restoring God’s creation back to what He intended when He began this “human project”.

Although we rejoice at the gift of salvation we are also living in what some theologians call the “already and not-yet kingdom”. This suggests that although Jesus has already paid the price for our sins and has given us a gift to share in eternity with him; we still have to receive this gift, open it, and use it. What does it look like to use this gift? It looks like ordinary moments of kindness, love, and justice. It looks like proclaiming God’s goodness even when all we see is brokenness around us. It means making “disciples” by encouraging others to join us in the God-glorifying work we are committed to. More than anything it looks like making the personal decision to follow Jesus. This decision puts us on a path of becoming a true reflection of God’s image. As we enter the Easter holiday season I encourage you to do some self-reflection on your own spiritual wellbeing. If you would like to know more about Jesus and how you can follow Him please reach out to any of your faculty members, myself, or the Office of Spiritual Life.

Social Workers Breaking Barriers

March is the month that we celebrate social work and the contribution our profession makes to society. We take time to reflect on the history of our profession and the many women and men who have shaped social work into what it is today. We also pause and reflect on our identity and current areas of focus. This year the theme for social work month is Breaking Barriers. The National Association of Social Workers chose this theme to draw attention to all the ways social workers act to break barriers that prevent communities from thriving. In their rationale they highlight the work of past social workers like Jane Adams and Ida B. Wells while also pointing out the innovative work being done by current social workers who are breaking economic, psychological, and structural barriers faced by communities across the nation.

This month I encourage you to take some time to reflect on your identity as a social worker. Think about what you are passionate about and why you chose to enter into a doctoral program to develop solutions to societal problems. Consider the ways that you are breaking barriers and how individuals, families, organizations, and communities will be better off because of your sacrifice and commitment to your profession. Although being a barrier breaker is hard work, we are encouraged by scripture that reminds us not to get tired of doing good, because we see results, if we do not give up (paraphrased from Galatians 6:9). Stay in the fight! Keep breaking barriers!

Fulfilling the Dream

In just a few short days we celebrate MLK Day; a national holiday. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an extraordinary man who stood up for justice and used his voice and influence to speak up for the marginalized and oppressed. He did this so effectively that he was hated and ultimately murdered. However, the version of MLK that we often get today has been neutralized, de-radicalized, and used as a symbol to make us feel safe and unified. This could not be further from the reality of Dr. King and his message. Many selectively quote Dr. King’s speeches and focus on the line when he talks about his dream for his children. This line makes us feel warm and optimistic. However, if you read the entire speech (and you absolutely should) you’ll see how we often take his words out of context. His dream is not one of colorblindness or blind optimism. Instead, he challenges us all to join him in radical love that demands justice. He challenges those in power to stop their oppression and do what is right. He demands jobs, opportunity, and equity. This is the real dream! He dreamt of a world where one’s color, language, ethnicity, or immigration status wouldn’t predetermine health, educational outcomes, income, wellbeing, or life expectancy. As social workers, we are called to fulfill that dream.

As we celebrate MLK day and move into Black History Month I challenge you to fulfill the dream by staying focused on developing the knowledge and skills necessary to be an effective advocate for those who have no voice. We should “Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God” – Micah 6:8

God With Us

This season is filled with holidays and celebrations. Many of us look forward to taking a break from school and work and spending more time with loved ones. However, for the Christian community, December is the time when we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus. The nativity story is very familiar; baby born in a manger, three wise men, you know the rest. However, if we stop for a moment and really think about the method God used to redeem humanity and reconcile us to himself, we should be in awe. Although God could have sent a memo, used a messenger, or some other impersonal approach, He chose instead to engage with humanity directly. He chose to live among us, know our struggles, and experience our joy and pain. He chose to be WITH us so that in saving us we could be confident that He knows us intimately and loves us deeply. That is what makes the Christmas story so beautiful and powerful. This is also a model for us today as we seek to help those who are vulnerable and voiceless. In the DSW program, we call this approach Community Engagement; a desire to intimately know and understand the lives and experiences of those we hope to serve. As you go through the holiday season, I pray you will take a moment to reflect on the miracle of the incarnation and all God is showing us through His plans for humanity. Let us not get so swept away in the business of the season that we miss the real miracle; God with us! Let us take time to rest and recover so we can move into the spring semester with renewed energy and excitement to engage deeply with communities and work WITH them to create solutions to our world’s most pressing problems. Merry Christmas!

Voting is Social Work

Today is November 8th, voting day. Throughout history the right to vote has been denied to many, contested by some, and demanded by a few. From the reconstruction era, to women’s suffrage, to the civil rights movement it has been well understood that voting matters. In our democracy, those who control the vote control the heartbeat of the nation. This reality compels some in our profession proclaim that voting IS social work. Voting is not just something that social workers should do. Instead, it is one of the many ways we live out our values as a profession committed to advocating for the poor, marginalized, and oppressed. We should seek wisdom in our decision making and engage in the voting process to achieve equity and justice for the oppressed (Isaiah 1:17). Not only should we all be committed to being informed and active voters, we should encourage our clients and colleagues to participate in the electoral process as well. Today, think about how you can motivate someone in your sphere of influence to vote. For more information on the connection between social work and voting visit the National Social Work Voter Mobilization Campaign. Get out there and vote!

“Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, and please the widow's cause,” (Isaiah 1:17)

October 2022 Program Announcements

Keep Hope Alive!

In 1988, after an unsuccessful run for President, Rev. Jesse Jackson spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta, GA. At the end of his compelling speech about the problems and possibilities facing the country, he left the audience with this charge. “Hold your head high; stick your chest out. You can make it. It gets dark sometimes, but the morning comes. Don’t you surrender! Suffering breeds character, character breeds faith. In the end faith will not disappoint. You must not surrender! […] Keep hope alive. Keep hope alive! Keep hope alive!”

I can only imagine that after spending time, money, and energy running for President and being unsuccessful, Rev. Jackson had plenty of reasons to feel hopeless and downtrodden. Yet, his message to the country (and maybe to himself too) was to “Keep Hope Alive!”. I want to share this message with you. When things get tough and you lose sight of why you are in a doctoral program, “Keep Hope Alive”. When your topic area seems too large and you feel inadequate to address the complexities, “Keep Hope Alive”. When the normal frustrations of life seem to pile on all at once, “Keep Hope Alive!”.

As you journey through this process you are developing the character that breeds hope. This will allow you to step out into the world as a true agent of hope and spread hope to individuals, families, and communities around the world. This month cling to Rev. Jackson’s encouragement and “Hold your head high; stick your chest out. You can make it!”

Walking on Water

Welcome to the Fall 2022 semester in the Doctor of Social Work program! We are excited to welcome 33 new DSW students to our Lancer family. Another 27 of you are now transitioning into your second-year coursework.

The End of the Road

For 30 of our DSW students, this month marks the end of the road in your academic journey. Words can’t quite express how excited I am for the class of 2022. You have sacrificed so much and worked harder than you ever thought possible to attain your doctoral degree. You stayed awake late and woke up early. You declined social events and put date night on hold all to reach this moment. Although you still have a few last things to complete before you are officially done, take some time over the next few weeks to reflect on the journey. In a few short weeks, you’ll participate in commencement and hooding ceremonies that mark the end of this road as a student. However, the road doesn’t end at a dead end. Instead, it’s a fork in the road. You now have multiple new journeys to embark on and new adventures await.

For the class of 2023, many of you have just transitioned into Doctoral Candidacy by successfully completing your Qualifying Exam defense. Celebrate! A colleague reminded me that sometimes “the days are long but the years are short”. Although each day of reading and writing feels long; the years will fly by. Take time to connect with one another and support each other. Enjoy your time as a student because you’ll be nearing the end of this road in no time (just ask your graduating colleagues). May the joy of the Lord be your strength as you wrap up the semester (Nehemiah 8:10).

Hello DSW Students,

It’s officially defense season! I know you all are working hard on wrapping up your major projects and are focused on preparing for your defenses. June 2022 Program Announcements

The Shifting Seasons

The bible tells us that there are many seasons in life. There is a time to weep and to laugh, a time to mourn and to dance, a time to keep silent and a time to speak (Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8). We have collectively experienced a dramatic shift in seasons over the last month. We celebrated AAPI Heritage Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, and a number of individual and collective accomplishments among our DSW family. At the same time, we collectively grieve and morn with the families impacted by the horrific murders in Buffalo and Uvalde.

All the pain we see on the news daily can be overwhelming and cause us to want to throw our hands up. However, as Christians we are called to speak out against injustice and serve others with Christlikeness. Further, as social workers we are called to pursue social justice and to advocate for the vulnerable, oppressed, and marginalized. Because we live in a broken world we will continue to be confronted with senseless tragedies. My prayer is that we continue to allow God to lead and equip us to bring hope, healing, and innovative solutions to address our worlds’ most pressing problems. Please know that the faculty of the Division of Social Work are actively engaged in works to confront violence and extremism in our local communities. If you are feeling compelled to act you can join us in prayer and also visit the NASW website to learn more about how you can advocate for change here.

April/May 2022 Program Announcements

Doctor of Social Work Students,

Congratulations on completing another semester in the Doctor of Social Work program. I know this semester came with its share of challenges and triumphs. However, through it all, you continue to press forward toward fulfilling the dream God gave you. Well done!

For first-year students, this summer semester marks your official transition into Phase 2 of the DSW program. This summer semester is key in developing your ability to function as an independent scholar-practitioner. You’ll likely notice that the summer semester feels “different”. You will be spending a lot more time on your own project and a lot less time with your classmates in formal classroom activities. Think of this semester as your “academic adolescence” that transitions you from “early life” to “adulthood”.

For all of you, I’ll continue to pray for your health and ability to manage everything without becoming overwhelmed with anxiety.

Delayed Spring 2022 Start

California Baptist University announced the start of the Spring 2022 semester will be delayed more than a week amid the current spread of the coronavirus Omicron variant.

CBU President Dr. Ronald L. Ellis said University officials are continually monitoring pandemic conditions and will notify students and employees if further changes become necessary.

In-person classes for traditional undergraduate programs are now scheduled to resume Jan. 18, eight days later than originally scheduled. CBU COVID-19 safety guidelines in effect since the start of the current academic year will remain in effect until further notice.

Dr. Chuck Sands, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said delaying the start of the semester does not impact CBU’s Online and Professional Studies (OPS) or graduate courses in the E1/G1 course schedule.

Delaying the start of classes means the spring semester will end on April 30 for traditional programs and on May 8 for OPS E2/G2. Additionally, spring commencement, previously scheduled for the week of April 25, will be pushed back to the week of May 2 and summer sessions will begin on May 9.

December 2021 Program Announcements

Doctor of Social Work Students,

You made it! Can you believe you’ve completed the fall semester? I know this program is challenging. Some days you wondered if you made the right decision. You wondered if you have what it takes to be successful. Let me tell you that you did make the right decision and you are exactly where God wants you to be. I pray that you each go into the winter break with a plan to reconnect with loved ones, do some self-care, and get some rest. Whatever time you would normally be in class, spend that time doing something purposeful to recharge your batteries. I pray you come back to the spring semester with renewed energy and excitement. Most of all, I pray God’s blessing over you and your family. I pray for your stamina and growth. I pray that the individuals, families, and communities you touch will see God’s love through you.

Have a very Merry Christmas and I’ll see you all in the new year.

Doctor of Social Work Students,

Can you believe you are halfway through the fall semester! With all the reading, writing, and studying you are doing you might not have had the time to sit back and revel in the fact that you are on your way to having a doctoral degree. Many of you will be the first in your family to hold the title “Dr.”. Some of you will be one of few people in personal or professional life to have completed a doctoral program. You are exceptional. While this program can be overwhelming at times and pushes you beyond what you thought possible, always remember that you have been privileged to pursue doctoral education so that others might benefit from the work you do. Hang in there and don’t grow weary. You will soon reap the benefits of your labor if you don’t give up (paraphrased from Galatians 6:9).

September 2021 Program Announcements

Welcome Doctor of Social Work Students!

I am so excited to join you all for a new academic year. I want to send a special welcome to our new incoming DSW students. We are so glad to have you as part of the Lancer DSW family. To our second year students, welcome to Doctoral Candidacy! I am excited about this year and all the wonderful things in store for you all. Our theme for the year is Becoming an Agent of Hope. Today hope is what our world needs most and it will take trained leaders like you to serve as the catalyst for hope in communities that are feeling hopeless. Isaiah 61:1 is our guiding scripture and provides a beautiful image of what an Agent of Hope looks like:

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,

because the Lord has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

to proclaim freedom for the captives

and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]

My prayer for you all this year is that you use your platform as a scholar-practitioner to proclaim the good news, repair broken hearts, and shine a light in dark places. You are the ones who will lead community change around the globe!

May 2021 Program Announcements

Here are some important program announcements:

Major Projects Orientation: Thank you to all who attended the orientation session. I hope it provided clarity and gave you some insight into the road ahead. You can watch the recorded session here: https://youtu.be/TeWxq5uG3OQ. Also, visit the DSW Portal site to download resources for the Qualifying Exam and Comprehensive Project www.calbaptist.edu/DSWPortal

Course Schedule: All DSW should have received an email with details about their course schedule moving forward. Thank you again for your adaptability as we continue to create a high quality doctoral experience for you all.

This summer, the DSW program is blessed to have two high profile instructors who will be co-teaching one section of SWK725 Leadership in the 21st Century. Because we seek to provide students with the best executive level leadership exposure, we have recruited Dr. Chuck Sands (University Provost) and Dr. Jacqueline Gustafson (CBSS Dean) to co-teach the course on Thursday nights in the summer. This is a very rare opportunity for students to engage with two senior level administrators who both have incredible expertise in leading non-profit organizations. We would like ALL students to have the opportunity to learn from these phenomenal leaders. Thus, all students in the program will be taking this class together this summer.

Please note that the SWK725 Leadership course will be delivered in a hybrid format so that you will have live synchronous class every other week. On the weeks when you are not live in class you will have self-paced online modules to complete. This means that you will be meeting live for your virtual class 7 times during the summer semester and spend the rest of your time completing online content at your own pace.

The dates of the live class sessions are May 13 & 27; June 10 and 24; July 8 & 22; August 5

Summer Textbooks: The required texts for summer semester have been posted to the DSW Portal site. Please use the information to help you plan for the semester

Summery Residency: Please mark your calendar for July 28-31 for your second Residency Intensive. Plan to block out the entire day each day. Days 1-3 (Wednesday to Saturday) will be held in-person at the CBU campus. Day 4 will be virtual. If you live at a distance you may want to begin making travel plans now. Feel free to contact Lindsay Davis should you need assistance with travel information. As always, if any student faces extreme difficulty with attending Residency in-person you must contact Lindsay Davis to initiate the process of requesting an accommodation.

Covid Vaccinations: Riverside County is now providing COVID-19 vaccinations for individuals over 16 years old. You can find more information at their website https://www.rivcoph.org/COVID-19-Vaccine-with-Registration or by calling 951-358-5000 (Mon – Fri 8 AM – 5 PM) or 2-1-1
