Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) is an outcomes-based approach to medical education.
It focuses on frequent, low stakes assessments.
Anchored on ‘in-the-moment’ coaching by faculty and senior learners.
CBME has been initiated to ensure physicians meet the health care needs of their community.
Competence By Design (CBD) is the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeon’s of Canada’s framework for CBME.
Pediatrics officially launched CBD in July 2021. Residents who began training in July 2021 or after are officially in a CBME program. This means that promotion decisions are predicated on completion of the CBD program. As of July 2024 all of our residents are in a CBME program.
The CBME program will take four years to complete. There are four stages of training:
o Transition to Discipline (TTD)
o Foundations (F)
o Core (C)
o Transition to Practice (TTP)
