The Competence Committee (CC) is a carefully assembled group that synthesizes data from EPAs and other documented feedback to make promotion recommendations. Our CC is led by CC chair Dr. Spencer van Mil.
We have representation from throughout the Paediatric Department as well as a non-Paediatric physician member.
The group meets monthly. Each resident is reviewed every 3 to 4 months.
The CC reviews all information in the ePortfolio. Each resident in the CBME program has a coach, who presents information to the committee on the resident’s progress and efforts based on documentation from the resident’s coaching files. All information is used to make decisions on progress and promotion through the stages of training. Following each review, residents receive feedback from the CC outlining successes and areas to focus on.
The CC can only use documented information to make promotion decisions. Narrative feedback provided on EPAs and ITARs is incredibly valuable for both the learners and the CC. Feedback does not need to be long to be excellent. For more information on providing helpful feedback please see our Faculty Resources.
