There is a mutual understanding amongst everyone involved that the Cauldron is a dangerous place– monsters and wild magics are abundant, dragons pierce the sky, and what is a mortal soul to do about it? In the chaos of the Cauldron, Pactmagic has become incredibly important, a way of harnessing the Unreality of the world to make it yours, a way of Dreaming in conjunction with something Greater Than You. All magic users gain their abilities in some way through Pactmagic– even those natural-born.
Here are some general things to keep in mind when thinking about Pacts:
All Pacts, major and minor, must be a two-way agreement. Otherwise, it is a form of parasitism unique to the Starving Dark.
It may seem like Natural-born Witchlings break this rule– however, their magic is a result of a Major Pact that Silverpelt made with the four Clans long ago.
It is possible to be tricked into a pact, or misled– but not outright lied to.
To achieve this kind of trickery requires a certain cleverness that usually only the Gods hold– it is impossible for an ant to trick a spider into weaving it a web, but an ant may be tricked into the spider’s jaws–
The same goes for the nature of the pact itself– to lie in actions is just as bad as lying in words, after all.
Breaking any pact, major or minor, is possible– but not advised! It will always grant the Pactbreaker some sort of curse, a punishment for their failings.
The debatable exception to this is a natural-born Witch who rejects the gifts of Silverpelt, as they still satisfy Other Pacts that the Clans made with the Old Silver Dame.
You can, in fact, make a Pact with multiple deities at once. However, this a dangerous thing– think of it like being in a committed relationship with two or more people at the same time. Incredibly possible, but requires extra effort and thought put into it. Besides, not all Deities and Spirits are OK sharing…
There is a difference between an agreement with a spirit and a capital P Pact– minor pacts are a sort of bargain, an equal, if minor exchange. Most Witches’ relationships with their familiars are minor pacts. Major Pacts are lifelong, binding spiritual contracts, that anchor themselves to the soul of the Sorcerer involved. The Pact between most Witches and Silverpelt is a major one.
To break a minor pact grants some small spiritual backlash, a sort of cosmic karma– to break a major Pact is to threaten the obliteration of one’s own soul.
The Beacon of the Clans, Patron of Witch and Wisdom alike. Most Witches are content with Her Pact, the Pact that brought their powers into being– but some seek more than Her strength. Warriors too seek the Light of Silverpelt– entreating Her for all sorts of Purifying and Guiding magics. Her Pactbearers that do not bear the title of Witch are warriors with the power of the Stars behind them– Her paws in the world that She oft may not touch herself. Starcraft, Stonecraft, Fatecraft, and Dreamcraft all fall under Her banner- she is most likely to impart knowledge of those such things.
The Patron of Matriarchs, Frr’ygg, the Spawn of Silvereye– a God made of both Light and Fire, one who guides all with righteous enough fury. Invoked for all true and powerful Protective magics, Goldeneye is what bestowed upon the Matriarchs their ability to shift– and it was the Goldeneye’s fury that destroyed the Witches who dared lock that ability away. Some believe that, through further Pact with Goldeneye, the ability to hamr-shift may again be uncovered– but that is a story yet untold. For now, the Goldeneye is Patron of Protection– Wardcraft, Wargcraft, and Spellcraft all fall under Goldeneye’s dominion. Those who make Pact with the Goldeneye experience these magics as sign.
The Patron of Trickery, a mischievous Godling known for her staunch protection of kits and apprentices. It is by her grace that younglings find themselves protected from the machinations of the Dark and its Kin. She is most often to make Pact with cats who go against the tide, tricksters and playful cats– who are not afraid to change things for the better. Her blessings and boons come in the form of Dreamcraft and Heimcraft– cats under her protection are worldly and well-traveled– even to worlds not their own. Luckyleap is also a talented Fatecrafter, and will impart upon you your fate if you tell her a good enough joke.
The Honorable Dragon of Duneclan, their Patron and God. The Wyvern is known to make Pact with Duneclan’s best and brightest, imparting upon them the first use of Flame. Cats devoted to the Wyvern may find themselves able to Speak Flame into existence, scorching their enemies– or, sometimes, their friends. The Wyvern is a theatrical Pact-maker, and often exacts strange prices for its aid– it loves a good show of faith. It is a master of Spellcraft and Wyrmcraft– the chief bestower of these magics onto its Pactbearers.
The Honorable Dragon of Fjordclan, their protector and their Dreamer. The Hydra makes pact with Fjordclan’s most sensitive artists, the lovers, the dreamers. It is a capricious Lord, however– and its nature is as ever-changing as the tides. The price of Pact with the Hydra is different for every soul it collects– but all are treated to protective and intuitive magics unbound. Dreamcraft and Wyrmcraft bend easiest to Pactbearers of the Hydra– but Colorcraft is also a knowledge almost exclusive to these Sorcerers.
The Honorable Dragon of Steppeclan, their Warlord and Huntkeeper– the Long makes Pact with the most competitive of Steppeclan’s warriors, the ones who eternally pursue. It is a demanding God, always asking for feats of strength and bravery from its Pactbearers. However, it is a nomadic Lord as well, often needing to be found, rather than seeking out its own Pactbearers. The gifts it grants are powerful, however– magics of Wargcraft and Wyrmcraft– as well as the same strength that blesses the Dragonchoir.
The Honorable Dragon of Wealdclan, the sleeping Leviathan in their caverns. The Lindwyrm forms Pact with the most stalwart of Wealdclan’s warriors, often asking only for one thing– to be remembered. It is a powerful Patron, but a judicious one, doling out its gifts only as much as one can afford to take them. The Lindwyrm is a great hoarder as well, and to make Pact with anything Else risks upsetting it– it places great value on its hoard, its pack. The Lindwyrm knows much of Runecraft and Wyrmcraft– and in exchange for loyalty, is willing to impart knowledge of these things.
Their boons are as varied as their personalities and the stories about them. Each Folklore Hero grants different boons– and they all exact different prices. More can be read about them in the MYTHS tab. However, they are all masters of Lorecraft.
Phoenixroar grants boons of Spellcraft and Blessingcraft.
Salamandersigh grants boons of Gandrcraft and Herbcraft.
Chimerafaces grants boons of Starcraft and Wyrmcraft.
Leviathancall grants boons of Cursecraft and Lichcraft.
Kelpiestep grants boons of Fatecraft and Runecraft.
Medusaheart grants boons of Starcraft and Stonecraft.
Feldgeister-blood grants boons of Bloodcraft and Wargcraft.
Sylphdancer grants boons of Cursecraft and Spellcraft.
Griffincatcher grants boons of Heimcraft and Gandrcraft.
Draketree grants boons of Runecraft and Stonecraft.
Gargoylevigil grants boons of Lichcraft and Spellcraft.
Gnomescamper grants boons of Fatecraft and Cursecraft.
A strange, unnatural Patron, more of a parasite than anything else. To make Pact with the Starving Dark, in some way or another, marks a cat as a Warlock– and, in the eyes of the Clans, marks them for death. A Warlock is never to be left alive, piloted around by the Hunger That is Pitch, the Always-Starving. Many magics can be gained by making Pact with the Starving Dark– but each one is terrible in nature, and each one exacts a terrible price. It is not a life, to live with the Starving Dark in your soul.
