Köttrtírr, or Cat’s Honor, is the pillar of every aspect of Cauldron Clan society. It is a part of daily life, with much more unspoken than stated clearly in the Code. Giving thanks to the elements for caught prey, caring for your Clan-mates, worship of the Honorable Dragons and Silverpelt & Goldeneye, and more are all activities which uphold a cat’s personal Honor and the collective Honor of their Clan. To tarnish your own Honor is to tarnish as well this collective Honor, putting the spiritual fidelity of the entire Clan in danger. It is not so much intertwined with their religion as it is their religion. The gods which the Clans call their Protectors are to whom they uphold Honor in the name of and have been promised reward from in thanks for their service. The Code’s purpose is to maintain the Clans so that they may continue to fight against The Starving Dark both in their mortal vessels and past the Veil.
The Code of Honor in official oral tradition arose after the Olde Nights in an age called Founding; during Founding, the Four Clans became formalized under Champions Drakestar of WealdClan, Fathomless-star of FjordClan, Phoenixstar I of DuneClan, and Rocstar of SteppeClan. A few generations after their time, when it became clear there would need to be a figurehead and arbiter of this Code, the Wardens were codified and the Code expanded by Wardens Dvergr-keeper of WealdClan, Treasure-keeper of FjordClan, Helhound-keeper of DuneClan, and Harpykeeper of SteppeClan.
The Code of Honor remains oral, though it is known in WealdClan’s famous Record-keeping Caves there is one entirely dedicated to the written Code. FjordClan makes much trade off the glowing enamel-paint the Wealdans are so particular about using for these etched runes.
It is understood that Warrior is synonymous with an Honorable cat, and thus refers to cats of all ranks unless specified in the wording.
THE CLAN CODE OF HONOR.
A Warrior is loyal to their Clan above all else, even at the cost of their life. To die in service of your Clan is an Honor, and to Leafhome will the Valkyries ascend you.
A Warrior will not take a mate for love beyond your Clan’s borders, and especially not bear them kits, for to do so is to Incite Division of Loyalty and Duty to All, a great Dishonor. A Warrior is allowed to have a sire of another Clan to keep the bloodlines fresh, but they must never fall in love.
A Warrior is not to bring Suffering nor Grief nor Death upon your clan-mates, and to do so is to give Dishonor to the Clans’ very soul.
A Warrior will respect the words of your superiors, and look always to the Champion & Warden.
Witches and Matriarchs are to be protected at all necessary cost. A Warrior is to never bring Harm upon a Witch or Matriarch.
A Warrior will not hoard resources, and contribute to the Clan. A Warrior will not waste resources, nor hunt for pleasure.
A Warrior will bring no Harm upon a kitten or apprentice; a Warrior will inflict no Fatal Harm to an apprentice on the battlefield.
The Crowns’ and Courts’ duty is to Uphold and Honor the Code, and to be Held to the Code, as it is to Perform and Honor their Duties. A Crown or Courtier who cannot uphold this is to Step Down or be Removed.
The Nurturing and Persevering of the Clan comes before all else; to Abuse one’s Duties and/or granted Powers to fulfill these Duties is to be brought before the Warden and/or the Wardens’ Court and Sentenced.
A Warrior will not hunt more prey than is Needed to feed the Clan, and will not hunt for personal pleasure.
A Warrior is to Care for the Needs of the Clan; to hunt, to camp-keep, to remember histories, to Contribute.
Elders, dams, kittens, the infirm, and Witches must be fed before anyone else’s stomachs are to be filled.
A Warden or Champion is to elect their Younger so soon as a candidate or selection of them becomes apparent.
A cat must be at least 36 moons old to become Warden or Champion. Should the Younger not meet this requirement or in the case of a valid candidate not available, a Veteran or Wisdom will act in their stead as regent until they are of age & prepared to perform their Trials or Rites.
A cat must be at least 6 moons old to become an apprentice.
Kittens 15 moons and younger may only leave camp under the protection of a merit-having adult.
NOTES.
While it’s not against the Code for immediate family to mentor & apprentice, there’s a heavy social stigma against it that lingers from the ages past when Crownship was passed on by bloodrune, and the resulting War of Elements during the Bloodiest Nights which ultimately ended the tradition.
Witchlings are not exempted from Onus Code 9.
An Honorable Warrior is Enemy to the Dark-Which-Is-Starving; to make Supplication or Treaty is to cast Dishonor over the Souls of All Honorable Cats, and Damn your soul to Niddhöggr’s Jaws in the Dark Below. Our Claws Unsheathe in the Name of the Dragons of the Tree.
Gathering areas and outpost-camps are under Hospitality; it is the duty of the Crown and Court to provide shelter, food, generosity, and safety; as it is the guests to bring news and gifts, and to do no harm nor dishonor upon their hosts.
Witches, Matriarchs, and Heralds are not to be Punished for crossing into another Clan’s territory when their paws are Moving Against the Hungry-Absence-Behind-Us.
A Warrior will not let leave their clan-mates from the safety of Camp on Empty Nights, lest they be Haunted by the Veil-lost Ghost and Dishonor both.
An Honorable’s fallen body must be given back to their Element, lest their Roaming Soul become lost in the Veil or be Devoured by The Dark. The fallen bodies of the Dishonorable and Without-Honors (outsiders) are to be Purified by the Witches so that they will not rise Draugr.
A Witch’s duty is first and foremost to the Safety of their Clan’s Souls against that which Slithers-Away-From-Sunlight.*
An Honorable Warrior’s Duty, for the safety of Clan, is to never leave alive a Warlock.
NOTES.
An outpost-camp is a rudimentary camp created for the purpose of resting on patrol routes, taking shelter, and meeting with the other Clans or outsiders.
* This part of the Code is particularly tangled, as it is interpreted similarly yet with wildly different conditions between each Clan. In WealdClan, a Witch may have kits but no lover. In FjordClan, no kits nor lover. In DuneClan, there are no restrictions on kits or love. In SteppeClan, one may take a lover(s) but no kits. These un-uniform restrictions sprout from the distinctly different cultural values of the Clans.
A Warrior is not to hunt beyond their Clan’s borders, nor permit hunting by others within their Clan’s borders. Prey gone over the border is lost.
A Warrior is never to trespass on another Clan’s territory. A Warrior should await at the border for a patrol, and/or send ahead a Herald.
The location(s) of a Clan’s camp(s) is Sacred, and so must never be Known by another. To seek to know another Clan’s camp is Dishonorable.
Disputes between Clans of Any Size may only be Resolved before the Eyes of and at the Judgement of a Lawspeaker (Warden, Young Warden, Heralds) or the Wardens’ Court.
Festival, Sanctum, and Conclave is to be Held regardless of current inter-Clan relationships or states of war.
A Warrior is not to Seek to Slay an Honorable Foe, for all who are Honorable are Shields Against the Shadows-Eating-Us. By Frr’reyja’s Mercy is it not Dishonor to defend one’s own life nor be Blamed for the Frenzy of Bloodspill.
An Honorable Warrior will give no Succor nor Mercy upon the Dishonorable.
An Honorable Warrior inflicts no Undue Suffering upon their Foe; nor even against the Shadow-Foes.
Matriarchs and Witches are Forbidden from participating or engaging in Warfare, both as Strategists and Combatants.
Heralds are Forbidden from engaging in Active Combat, and have Immunity on the battlefield, so long as they do not engage. To harm or slay a Herald in Combat is of Utmost Dishonor.
NOTES.
Frr’reyja: the Formal and Honorable Name of Silverpelt.
A Warrior dam may take a donor sire from Outside the Clan so long as there is no Love between them, solely the Intent of Kittens. This is acting Honorably in the sake of Fresh Blood.
A Warrior’s bloodrune is of their dam; the sire’s bloodrune may be used in the case of a dam without bloodrune. All Outsiders who Become Honorable, upon their swearing-in, must select or be given their Bloodrune.
To harass or punish kittens for the crimes and/or circumstances of their blood is Dishonorable. To harass and punish the dam of a donor sired litter is Dishonorable.
